Just popped on to see whether anything changed with the new update -- it looks like the way profiles work (and what info they store) has changed, at least. You can now 'ping' your fellow Gatherites -- no idea how that works, but there it is -- and you can now list a current status, similar to how various social networking sites do it (Myspace, Facebook, Yuwie, and the like). You can also list a lot more information in your personal profile, and control who can see this information.

Anyone notice anything else that's changed in this update?

I am a little confused on the "ping" thing, but I like the way profiles are now. I like how the pages are displaying to the rest of Gather. I also enjoy the fact that I can share as much info (or not) as I please. Very nice updates from what I have seen thus far.
