Holiday Charity

Ah yes, the season of "giving". I don't mind the kettles and bellringers. They have become an integral part of the winter holiday season. I also don't mind them, the Salvation Army, as they are an honorable and very reputable charity organization; however, I am a bit peeved at the corporations that removed them or silenced the bells.

As for many other "charity" collections that sprout during this season I am quite wary. Many so called charities are extremely top-heavy with outrageous salaries to executives and business expenses, which dilutes the actual "charity" of these organizations to very little. Many charities are dispersing less than 20% of receipts to the parties they claim to help.

Charitable giving should not be confined to only the winter holiday season, needs go on unfettered throughout the year. Give what you can when you can. Know the organization, their reputation, and their effectiveness that you are giving too. Many organizations need donations other than money, such as time, labor, skills and talents, in other words they need you, not just your money.

You either have to find somewhere else that will help you with the services you need...or you go without! I hit the streets when I was 15 and you had no choice in doing what you had to do to get by...help or no help.

I agree. Charity needs to be done all year long. There are those who are too proud to ask for help and they end up doing without, just as Rob said.
