Gather Hates Me! ;-)

December 13, 2007 11:26 AM EST
views: 254 | rating: 9.9/10 (94 votes) | comments: 116

I got an email yesterday because of "generic" comments that I make on people's images.  Now I don't deny making comments like "I love it" and "very nice"  But that's how I feel about most images.  Most images here are either of people's kids/family or nature stuff.  Now I love both of those things (see my posts for proof), but I don't think I really want to say, "Why, that bird you posted is beautiful" or something that specific.  I see a beautiful bird and I post something like "That's awesome, I give this a 10!" and it's "Generic".   I don't like it that Gather, and those who report things as "SPAM" tell me how I should comment and how I should not.  I may feel that posting another crime story is SPAM because I personally don't want to read it (Just an example, I enjoy reading these storys).

The greatest thing about Gather (In my opinion) is that I can meet all differant kinds of people with all kinds of interests.  If it is against the TOS to post the first thing that comes to mind on a picture then I doubt I will stay around.  I can post whatever I want on many other sites, but I choose this one.   I hope it does not get too bad and force many people to find another site to "Gather" together (pardon the pun)

I find it funny that they advertise the optoin to post for gift cards, then punish when people take advantage.  I post articles, pictures, and comment on many people's stuff as well.  I am using Gather in the way that I enjoy most, and hope I can continue on forever.  I have, however, decided that I will continue to post things the way that I want to.  If Gather chooses to ban me then I guess I will have to find another site that is more open to let EVERYONE post what they want.   So, if you stop seeing me around here, you know why.

Until then.  THANK YOU, NICE ONE, AWEASOME! and all those otehr "Generic comments" that I get emails thanking me for on a daily basis will continue!  Fight the power.  ;-)

What do you wall think!

Oh, and to Gather staff...My generic comments still generate ad dollars for you as I view all the ads every time I load the next picture, or article (and I am starting to want to ride on amtrak! )

This is the 3rd article I've read on this. I have not got one of those emails but hey, I may get it next week. I have Yahoo as my main address and no intention to change. Personally I do generic when I can't think of anything else to say or I've seen an image for the millionth time. I don't understand why some gatherers post the same thing over and over again....or pretty close to the same. Am I supposed to find something special about each image that is at a slighly different angle.
At any rate, I like generic comments and I understand them. I know someone has viewed the image and taken the time to comment.

Oh, and anyone looking at my posts. As far as I am concerned, FEEL FREE TO POST GENERIC STUFF ON MY CONTENT! I like any posts, It shows that people are looking at it. I don't expect you to make a heartfelt 3 paragraph comment on yet another picture of my kids (even though they are REALLY cute, and I could write a page on every picture) But to you they are just some more REALLY cute kids. Generic works for me and my kids.

I agree! I am sick of people just "report this as potentially inappropriate"! I think that someone has too much time on there hands to go around and irritate people. Maybe that is how they are getting more "Gather points" who knows. Keep up the comments my Gather People!

Here is a ten for you. I do not have time to write awhole paragraph when I am looking at photos or reading articles, and my hands do not work real well on this key board. I hit the wrong key and someone makes fun of my spelling, this is getting to be a real drag, when someone comes in and tells you your comments are not good enough.
So good job, keep on keeping on, Db 10, etc.

That's pretty funny since so many people are posting obviously cut-and-paste comments, often stating right IN the comment that it IS cut-and-paste. I try to be original, but sometimes the picture just inspires a "Wow" or "How cute"? How original can one be looking at the 47th cute kittie picture in an hour (Don't get me wrong, I LIKE cute kittie pictures. It just gets tough to think of different, creative things to SAY about them!).

I think someone at Gather has too much time on their hands and is trying to create work for themself so they appear more indispensible than they really are.

Michelle, if you're thinking about wanting to ride on Amtrak, send me your Internet e-mail so I can invite you to their rewards program. There's something in it for me and for you if you join and then travel within 90 days of joining their rewards program (it's kind of like a frequent flyer program, except in this case it's a frequent rider program...)

it's not just about "generic" posts but there are things you (and I have done this).. might post about that you love.. maybe you bought something or heard about some product that someone tried and it was quite interesting-- or an online store that had interesting items for sale-- and when written about - someone calls it spam.
How can it be spam if you are offering up an opinion about something or making holiday gift suggestions.
after all, isn't that what the site is all about?
I had something I wrote for mother's day (it had been published in a print magazine but I kept online rights) and I submitted here because the store was online and had truly unusual gifts at very affordable price points.. and it got called SPAM
Spam, generic.... what is it in YOUR eyes is what counts. I think there are things here that are more spam-like but I figure I don't have to read them.
Live and let live......

If some takes the time to read/view something I posted, I appreciate it! I don't care if it's 'generic' or not.

Sometimes you can only be generic when commenting on an image of a family pet or member.

This staffer must be new or head's swelled up to the point that beingslightly powerful makes 'em mean and stupid. Don't worry about - I don't.

I'd rather have generic comments than NO comments. Sometimes I do not have the time to write a full article in the comment section and don't feel I should have to. Often I want to leave a comment and a rating but do not have a lot of time, so I will leave a short (and I guess, generic) message. I don't think the Gather staff or anyone should tell us what kind of comments to leave. If I am required to leave a long, drawn out comment when I don't want to, I will not remain on Gather.

I dont' mind the generic either. To me it means someone took the time to at least look at what I have posted and felt enough to post a comment. As you said, Many times the "generic" thing is the first thing that comes to mind. I post a lot of "beautifuls" and "very pretty" on photos because that is how I truly feel and it's the first thing that comes to mind, not that I'm trying to just wrack up points. I love looking at the photos.

I didn't know that "generic" comments were against gather rules. Sometimes when you're looking at your 10 billionth flower picture, all you can think to say is "nice flower".Sometimes I just look and don't comment and that makes people mad too. I really can't believe that someone reads all the comments and then judges some to be generic. Everyone posts generic posts after a while. When you go to as many articles, pics, etc. as we all do then there is hardly anything else to say. After a while I seem generic in everything I say, does that mean that I don't mean that it is a cool pic? No, I really mean it but sometimes the demands on our time is overwhelming and we just don't have time to be specific. I say that you have the freedom of speech. No matter if it sounds generic to someone else or not. Great article. (Is that too generic?)

Not sure if this repeats anyone elses comments but personally I think that there should be emails sent to those who cut and paste generic comments at a certain speed, that is spamming. If you open up a page of say 100 photos at a time and just click, paste, click out and go to the next, you are point whoring and at a fast RATE!!! That is what I think about the silliness of generic comments. That is spamming. That is people trying to get as many comments in as they can not really looking at the pictures. Yeah, they may see it as they scroll down but it's just to get to the comments.
I have gone into pictures and said Wow, that's a cool shot. but I don't leave these really unimaginative poems everywhere that say I looked and liked and gave you a 10. That's not real. Maybe for some of you it is and I have done it myself in the past then I realized it wasn't worth my time to just do that. I now only comment on things I like and look for when searching in the pull down search window.
Hopefully, you catch my drift with this opinion. I don't care if you want to leave a generic comment and I can also see gather's point of view but I think it's about how fast these people are leaving comments that are generated and pasted that they should be looking at. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season.

I think this is ridiculously stupid. People need to stop complaining because a comment is a comment. It helps out both people so I don't see what the big deal is. If you don't want the possibility of receiving a generic comment, then hmm, disable comments. Why people do this is beyond me.

I have not yet gotten an email like that either but I think it stinks!!! I think generic comments should be fine if that is what people want to leave. I am not on here for points i am here to look at stuff and leave stuff for others to look at. Sometimes when I look at something i can't really thing of anything to say but I don't want to leave without letting the person know I looked! Sometimes a "nice capture" or "great shot" is all i can think of to leave behind!!!

there were people who were abusing it and pasting the same comment over and over...something like ...
Great photo...thanks for sharing. Feel free to look at my stuff too and give me some points.
You were not one of them, so don't worry.
They also got bit in the butt for posting articles about "if you comment on all my stuff, i'll comment on yours."
Now for a comment that is a paste:

I put all my comments in a folder in my email...now I have 176 in there...I got distracted and was commenting for fun. But I really like to return comments and comment on my connections. Peace...and goodwill

This is the first that I have heard of these notices.
i got a rather odd comment on one of my pics that stated something to the effect that it was a standard comment that the poster pasted on everything.
I also will leave comments like "verry funny" and "thank you"
I wonder when my notice will arrive:)

This is the first I have heard of these notices. I know that I enjoy having you as a gather friend and that you and I exchange comments all the time. I have never had an issue or problem with any of your comments. In fact I have always appreciated your eagerness to post and comments so often! I hope things work and you stay forever!

I love your rant MIchael, I guess that is not generic, although I have said that on other rants too, I hope this doesn't get ridiculous now, I was saying Merry Christmas at the end of all my comments for awhile, tis the season, is that generic, I hope not, thanks for sharing.

I don't mind 'generic' comments as long as someone takes time to write a different one each time they comment.
What bothers me are the ones that post a 'cut and paste' comment and it is the same one in every comment they make. When I get one of those I wonder if they really took the time to look at the image or read the article or are just racing through Gather to try to comment the most....
I like to respond to all comments made on my articles and images....if the same comment is left on all it makes mine sound forced when I reply.

I'm inclined to agree. If you say "oh, what a pretty flower" 25 times, that becomes a generic comment, too. I've left plenty of what could be considered "generic" comments. I've also left many that were very specific to the topic.

I hope you stay around here for a long time. I haven't gotten one of those notices yet. There is a lot of times when I just say "Nice photo" or something. Then when I get to somthing I really want to talk about (like this) my answer gets a lot longer. It just depends a lot on how something hits you!

WEll Michael, then you won't be alone because I am a woman of few words. Maybe I'll be next. I have MS and sometimes words are hard to find. Especially when my fingers won't follow the commands from my brain and I have to constantly back space to fill in missing letters. Oh well. Keep your chin up and have a wonderful Holiday season.

A generic comment means someone has taken the time to look and respond. It may not give a lot of information, but, every piece counts.

Gosh, Michael, I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you.

I think the emails from Gather were aimed at cut and paste comments from those trying to rake in as many points as possible before Christmas.

I too, sometimes leave a 2 or 3 word comment just to return a favor or maybe I just don't have my "thinking cap" on that day and see something I like and leave a little something.

Try not to let it bother you. : )

Robert - just a simple man - B. Dec 19, 2007, 5:09pm EST
Michael,

First, I like the fact that you often take the time to look at so many of my photographs. I just don't have so much time to return the favor too often; and you know what? You NEVER complain. That makes you a Gather saint to me.

Secondly, when it comes to photographs, most comments are just a few words or maybe one sentence which is fine. I have had longer comments but only because the person commenting feels some kind of attraction or seems in-touch with the image presented. But them cases are rare. If you want to tell me you're please with one of my images by saying "great shot", "wonderful" etc, etc - it is appreciated.

When it comes to articles, my philosophy changes just a little. Now on incoming comments I accept them all; but when I took the time to write an article, if you (anyone) finds that it is worth commenting on, then it's worth a moment of your thought and a couple or more sentences. That is how I treat other folks articles, if it's worth my comment, it's worth me thinking about what to say.

Finally, all my articles & photos are open to comments. Any comments, of any length, albeit even one word. So, Michael, in this too-long-winded comment; all I'm saying is keep up the Good Work! Thanks!

I don't think the quality of the comments is particularly the point--perhaps Gather was addressing the quantity. When I open my inbox and see that I have 15 or twenty comments from the same person, all virtually meaningless but posted on one picture right after another, it is the equivalent of Spam to me. However, once I simply delete them all rather than reading them, I have to say THANK YOU for the points. After all, I am the one who is getting the points for those comments, NOT the people who are sending them.

It seems to me that the problem is that long comments are okay (even if they are just cut & paste) but short comments are not. Just because a comment is short, doesn't mean that it is generic. In fact, as others have already said, sometimes all you can really say about something is just a few words. If the Gather powers that be are concerned with abuses, then they should be taking time themselves to look for people who are abusing the system, not just generalizing and taking people to task for leaving short comments.
