I got an email yesterday because of "generic" comments that I make on people's images. Now I don't deny making comments like "I love it" and "very nice" But that's how I feel about most images. Most images here are either of people's kids/family or nature stuff. Now I love both of those things (see my posts for proof), but I don't think I really want to say, "Why, that bird you posted is beautiful" or something that specific. I see a beautiful bird and I post something like "That's awesome, I give this a 10!" and it's "Generic". I don't like it that Gather, and those who report things as "SPAM" tell me how I should comment and how I should not. I may feel that posting another crime story is SPAM because I personally don't want to read it (Just an example, I enjoy reading these storys).
The greatest thing about Gather (In my opinion) is that I can meet all differant kinds of people with all kinds of interests. If it is against the TOS to post the first thing that comes to mind on a picture then I doubt I will stay around. I can post whatever I want on many other sites, but I choose this one. I hope it does not get too bad and force many people to find another site to "Gather" together (pardon the pun)
I find it funny that they advertise the optoin to post for gift cards, then punish when people take advantage. I post articles, pictures, and comment on many people's stuff as well. I am using Gather in the way that I enjoy most, and hope I can continue on forever. I have, however, decided that I will continue to post things the way that I want to. If Gather chooses to ban me then I guess I will have to find another site that is more open to let EVERYONE post what they want. So, if you stop seeing me around here, you know why.
Until then. THANK YOU, NICE ONE, AWEASOME! and all those otehr "Generic comments" that I get emails thanking me for on a daily basis will continue! Fight the power. ;-)
What do you wall think!
Oh, and to Gather staff...My generic comments still generate ad dollars for you as I view all the ads every time I load the next picture, or article (and I am starting to want to ride on amtrak! )

At any rate, I like generic comments and I understand them. I know someone has viewed the image and taken the time to comment.
So good job, keep on keeping on, Db 10, etc.
I think someone at Gather has too much time on their hands and is trying to create work for themself so they appear more indispensible than they really are.
sorry to hear about your troubles..
How can it be spam if you are offering up an opinion about something or making holiday gift suggestions.
after all, isn't that what the site is all about?
I had something I wrote for mother's day (it had been published in a print magazine but I kept online rights) and I submitted here because the store was online and had truly unusual gifts at very affordable price points.. and it got called SPAM
Spam, generic.... what is it in YOUR eyes is what counts. I think there are things here that are more spam-like but I figure I don't have to read them.
Live and let live......
Sometimes you can only be generic when commenting on an image of a family pet or member.
This staffer must be new or head's swelled up to the point that beingslightly powerful makes 'em mean and stupid. Don't worry about - I don't.
Great article!
I have gone into pictures and said Wow, that's a cool shot. but I don't leave these really unimaginative poems everywhere that say I looked and liked and gave you a 10. That's not real. Maybe for some of you it is and I have done it myself in the past then I realized it wasn't worth my time to just do that. I now only comment on things I like and look for when searching in the pull down search window.
Hopefully, you catch my drift with this opinion. I don't care if you want to leave a generic comment and I can also see gather's point of view but I think it's about how fast these people are leaving comments that are generated and pasted that they should be looking at. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season.
No time to say hello, goodbye!
I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!
No, no, no,no, no, no, no, I'm overdue.
I'm reallyin a stew.
No time to say goodbye, hello!
I'm late, I'm late, I'm late
Oh wait, I can't leave it that, I may get a nasty email.
BTW, I am with ya on the crime story thing, we hear enough about that in real life.
Great photo...thanks for sharing. Feel free to look at my stuff too and give me some points.
You were not one of them, so don't worry.
They also got bit in the butt for posting articles about "if you comment on all my stuff, i'll comment on yours."
Now for a comment that is a paste:
I put all my comments in a folder in my email...now I have 176 in there...I got distracted and was commenting for fun. But I really like to return comments and comment on my connections. Peace...and goodwill
i got a rather odd comment on one of my pics that stated something to the effect that it was a standard comment that the poster pasted on everything.
I also will leave comments like "verry funny" and "thank you"
I wonder when my notice will arrive:)
I meant them all.
What bothers me are the ones that post a 'cut and paste' comment and it is the same one in every comment they make. When I get one of those I wonder if they really took the time to look at the image or read the article or are just racing through Gather to try to comment the most....
I like to respond to all comments made on my articles and images....if the same comment is left on all it makes mine sound forced when I reply.
Merry Christmas!
I think the emails from Gather were aimed at cut and paste comments from those trying to rake in as many points as possible before Christmas.
I too, sometimes leave a 2 or 3 word comment just to return a favor or maybe I just don't have my "thinking cap" on that day and see something I like and leave a little something.
Try not to let it bother you. : )
First, I like the fact that you often take the time to look at so many of my photographs. I just don't have so much time to return the favor too often; and you know what? You NEVER complain. That makes you a Gather saint to me.
Secondly, when it comes to photographs, most comments are just a few words or maybe one sentence which is fine. I have had longer comments but only because the person commenting feels some kind of attraction or seems in-touch with the image presented. But them cases are rare. If you want to tell me you're please with one of my images by saying "great shot", "wonderful" etc, etc - it is appreciated.
When it comes to articles, my philosophy changes just a little. Now on incoming comments I accept them all; but when I took the time to write an article, if you (anyone) finds that it is worth commenting on, then it's worth a moment of your thought and a couple or more sentences. That is how I treat other folks articles, if it's worth my comment, it's worth me thinking about what to say.
Finally, all my articles & photos are open to comments. Any comments, of any length, albeit even one word. So, Michael, in this too-long-winded comment; all I'm saying is keep up the Good Work! Thanks!
Be Blessed!
Rene A.
As I always I love to thank people for sharing, it is so much more than I could do!
