In the fall of 1864, Massachusetts Governor John A. Andrew wrote to President Lincoln asking him to express condolences to Mrs. Lydia Bixby, a widow who was believed to have lost five sons during the Civil War. Lincoln's letter to her was printed by the Boston Evening Transcript.

I remember reading about how Lincoln suffered from severe clinical depression. Considering everything on his shoulders, especially things like this that touched him very personally, it is no small wonder.

A similar incident (five sons from one family being killed when their ship was sunk in the Pacific) resulted in legislation that one hopes will prevent all a family's several sons from being killed. The "Pvt. Ryan" movie was based on that legislation.

He was a deeply involved man, and so in touch with the "human side" of his position. It is a lesson I think that some of our politicians forget. How that mother must have felt to have received such a letter, and kudos to the man who forwarded it a caring and great president. Thanks for the link and the great post as always. Ellen B
