Traditions & Symbolism- Wombats LX

Traditions

These are the common threads that bind us. In an open society there is a wide spectrum. In a xenophobic society it is narrow. Holidays are traditions, a shared moment to recognize collectively and bond. During the holiday season we all have different traditions, varying greatly even within one faith.

Traditions are used to adhere seemingly disparate groups of people. While cobbling together the wide flung German states in the 19th century the oral tradition of tales such as those by the Brothers Grimm were used to explain to people whom had no concept of nationalism that they were one people. Their shared thoughts and beliefs were expressed through their storytelling.

While writing, do you imbue your story with traditions? If so are they divisive or an element that brings characters together bridging the gap? Traditions as they mature develop a symbolism. How much does symbolism affect your writing? Is it a conscious effort?

A large part of the conflict in my stories is usually based on belief systems (not religion, just whole-life). One story was about two families, one had started as servants of the other, and of course eventually it was revealed that they were genetically all linked.

I like to put symbolism into my writing, and hope it has a positrive affect. In so much as it being a conscious effort? I think it' can be a conscious effort. However, it's more magical when it happens innately...

I find this very hard to do as a writer. I love to read something and find the symbolism, it always gives me a chill. But I have no idea how to do it, without being clunky or obvious. I think DB and his DVC is a wonderful textbook example of a terrible misuse of the very idea of symbolism, which is one reason I found the book so horrendous.

g'morning all. Well, I'm wheelless today. Muddle puddles are dangerous things in my neck of the woods. So are young hot-shot yahoos, who have more vehicle than brain power to operate said vehicle. I'm thinking that would be true even if he was riding a bicycle. A classic example of an improper breeding program. Hmmm, I wonder if he would pose so I could make a poster advocating birth control.

I have discovered that while the belt that runs the she-bang of my car is fine, the 'tenser' which is a little bitty thing, is not. Guess which costs more to replace...

Good questions, Viv.

Tradition is a central theme for my current WIP. In fact, Grimm's is a key prop throughout the story.

For me, symbolism isn't laid in on purpose. If I spot something after the first draft, then I might go back and emphasize it.

Oh yah, Viv's Question: I love Grimm's tales btw. I think it less a conscious thought than innate. There are traditions that do bind and I find myself using them. Usually, like has been mentioned already, I spot them when I go back and read or when I'm layering. I have written stories in allegory style, mostly short stories, and it takes some clear thinking and lots of editing to get it smooth. Without that feeling of preaching or 'clunkiness'. Not in novels and I've read a few that are well done.

Morning Jules. Rand, that sounds interesting. If you need a reader.... Dave, there is much that happens here that needs explanation, lol!

So Jules, you've re-named, or added to my persona, heh? Rebellious? Me? Gosh you've only known me a short time and already you pick up on those hidden things. The insurgency of Sia, Sia the insurgent...my mom would agree with you and also agree with it being the 'evil' twin side of me, lololol!

Julie: Now I must protest! The "golf chick" moniker was bestowed by our dear friend Steve, who is actually a cheetah and thus has nevah prospahed. A more proper appelation might have been "golf chick admirer." Or "old fart slobbering over beautiful golf chick." Or ... well, you get the idea. Point is, it's NOT about cross dressing, capiche?

Morning all. Vivian, I'm pretty new to the fiction side of writing (all my humor is true, true, true), so I'd say look for symbolism in my writing and then email me and tell me where it is so I can say, "Clever."

It is a layer of craft on my list to starting practicing with. From what I've read my approach will probably be to go over the first draft and look for common threads/symbolism that I can enhance or build on.

OK, off to the gym. Stop talking until I get back.

Julie, sweet-pea, I hope the tea has done it's magic and you have some vim to go with your vinegar this morning. :

Jamie, just think if it started snowing atop those mountain of papers, you're working on? Hmmm. Yeah. And you're climbing to the top of the first step; 25,ooo feet of paper above sea level...On one side you have a two mile drop to Napal...on the other side, twenty thousand feet into your favorite cup of coffee...Sometimes working for a living can feel like an expedition...

Yes, those are my hands, settling on your hips, just so you'll know the perfect way to position them. Yes, that's right. Now, start your backswing .... Oh, yes. .... Oh, Yes. ..... OHHHHHHHH! Place marker. Good morning all. It's freezing raining (is that correct???) here in Philly. Lovely little tinkles hitting my windows. If only the kids weren't on school buses - which have NO seatbelts...

They're mandatory for everyone else, but a vehicle carrying 66 of our young isn't required by law to have them. On a cruddy weather day. Can you tell I'm stressing? I just can't believe the buses get away with not having them. Disaster waiting to happen, I tell ya.

Oh, some of you might have seen an article I put up that is no longer there. I hadn't read the last thread clearly enough to know that Vivian had the new Wombats thread. So, in keeping with Wendy's suggestion, I'll save it for whenever we need a thread in a hurry. I took off public viewing and published it to myself so that's why it was here for John's comment then disappeared. Wombats and Other Furry Creatures. It's got pics from SeaWorld. Let me know when you all want to see it.

Now back to our newly scheduled golf lessons...

Top o morning MacCoffman.

Gotta say I'm not a golf person. Tennis! How does it go, something about a good walk being ruined ;)

I think most writers subconsciously incorporate symbolism because it is ingrained in our collective unconscious and we don't notice it. I am keenly aware of symbolism, not surprising considering the art history and it often bleeds into my work. Sometimes I notice it after the fact and play off it, sometimes I intentionally weave it.

Getting in line for a golf lesson from Dr. Golfball. Who knew golf lessons could be so sexy?

I'm home already. Barely made a dent in my mountain of paper-grading. Tomorrow is officially "Grading Day" at the college, so I don't feel too guilty.

We had the seatbelt in busses discussion during lunch at work the other day. They were all griping that it would be hard to make the kids wear their seatbelt, and they'd have to monintor, yada yada yada. They should at LEAST be available to students who want to wear them. I remember when my son rode the bus (didn't happen often - field trips, for example), he would WANT a seatbelt. Said he felt unsafe in the bus.

Okay, Vivian's question: I don't intentionally put symbolism into my works, nor do I usually see any symbolism in my or even other writers' work, nor do I typically care that it's there. Yeah, my literature teachers didn't like me much. I'm a pleasure reader. So I don't layer symbolism after the fact either. I see themes, but that's different than symbolism. Sometimes the names of characters have meaning, but I wouldn't say that's symbolism either.

That sounded kinda grouchy. Sorry! Didn't mean it to.

Good morning Wombatistas.

School bus safety: I knew someone whose son died when his wrestling team's "commuter van" style bus (no seat belts) slid off the road. When the school couldn't promise to replace the old van with a safer vehicle, the dad filed a wrongful death suit for the cost of a safe, modern van, which he then purchased and presented to the school in his son's memory.

I hate the fact there are no seatbelts on school buses. Especially in the winter. I remember Jake in kindergarten getting in trouble for moving around and digging in his seat. When I asked him why, he said he thought the seatbelts had gotten stuck in the seat. Mom, the bus doesn't have seatbelts!

No one rides in any of my vehicles if they won't wear a seatbelt. Non-Negotiable.

Dave.. you naughty boy! There is now coffee all over my monitor! Was it good for you too Jules? lmao.

Sylvia I hope your car repairs aren't to horrible. We've got some pot holes around here which have swallowed entire cars, my husband found one with the Bronco.. we got him, kids and Bronco out. He did it on purpose and then said the kids made him. Wing brow.

Seat belts in buses. If the driver can make a load of five year olds sit, seat belts aren't a stretch.

Rand Rocks!

Stephen..shake my head.

Symbolism? I don't know. I love it in other work, but I don't know if I've managed to do well with it. Like Jamie I have themes, but that really isn't the same.

Congrats to Ann and Dale and Todd and Laz! Glad to see another of my favorites, Devil's Flat, also in the mix!

OK, that's all I had time for. No golf lessons (although Dave, you should try writing a sensitive scene!), no pool lessons (I'm staying out of the long line).

And MacCoffman, can you roll your rrrr's? That's an important skill.

Is Code Orange over? Dec 11th comes to mind, but I can remember if that was end of entries or contest.

I've completely over looked the wombats who won't be moving on. You guys rock and made the wombats proud. Well done, each and every one of you. Not only with awesome entries, but with the way you carried yourselves during the contest.

Big Hug.. decompress and enjoy the holidays.. Wombat nano in January.

3 hours, Patricia. Oh woe is me.

Code Orange voting ends the 15th. Winner announced the 31st. So if you haven't voted yet, I'd appreciate your "10" on my entry. Some other wombats are entered too.

Traditions - I sometimes will refer to them in my writing, but I don't often include the act of one. I guess I prefer to defy tradition in my writing, since my home life and holidays are pretty traditional.

Pool lessons will start at 10. Reserve early, space is limited.

Short time for lessons Simon, since we all get thrown out of the clubhouse at 11. And considering the probable length of that line...

OK, changed my mind. I'll sign up for pool, but only if Jamie is in front of me. I don't want her standing behind me, armed with a pool cue.

I'm only sorry JC isn't on the list - you should have been!

Symbolism...I'm not so sure. I definitely have recurring elements and I've made use of seemingly random bits for that purpose.

Hi, all,

Just a quickee before I go from work to my lunchtime yoga class (and boy, do I need it!). I'm with Jamie re: symbolism and my writing. I don't mind it in other people's work if it's not heavy-handed, but it's never been something I look for in a book.

Okay, yoga time...

Kids are home early, so I'll be offline. We've already got the friends showing up (read, the parents are still at work...) They've survived the bus trip. Beaker, that's just what I'm talking about, re: seatbelts.

When does voting end for this round of FCC? And are they then going to 5 finalists like in FCR?

And one last thing that I thought I'd pasted into my 2:41 comment:

Paul - cheesesteakes are the nectar of the gods in this part of the country. And we make the best!

Steve - cymbalism - ROTFLMAO

Sia - car repairs at Christmas = UGH - just like my almost-bursting water heater that had to be replaced right before we left for Thanksgiving. The bill just arrived...

Dream War? That's why we keep Steve around. We're all hoping for signed copies when he's published. Hurry up with that, won't you, Steve? Oh, I guess he's cute, funny, and thinks he's sweet, but those are just secondary characteristics.

I think all the FC1 survivors read the first 2 chapters, in any case. He was a finalist, after all. I haven't read the whole thing. Just the beginning.

Right FC1. I wasnt here then, so I missed it. Thanks for re-posting Steve. I am going to see if I can find Chapter 2. then I will do another shape shift, this time into..um..how about Tiffany, and then sweetly beg you for a sight at the rest of the book.

Steve - I want a signed copy.

Really a great read (since I'm supposed to be interacting with the kids...). I love what you did with the prologue. And Hector's "in" to Tabatha's dream. Great, great job.

Has she submitted it anywhere yet? This should get bought quickly.

One more comment on seat belts/school buses: our district can't afford to use a school bus for a field trip, so the moms (and some dads) get to volunteer to drive. And since Junior is in 1st grade, that means each kid must use a child safety seat. How fun is that--getting enough drivers to take about 2 dozen kids to the science museum or pumpkin patch or whatever; the kids lined up, each carrying a booster seat. (And each driver has been "screened" beforehand, of course.) The mind boggles at the logistics involved.

Ironic touch: when our high school athletes played in cities clear across the state (a three hour drive), some wealthy boosters had been renting a luxury coach to use in place of the mandated school bus. Apparently this was a violation of some rule, but I'm not sure how it was resolved. The parents wanted their kids to be able to sleep on the way back, since they wouldn't get home after games until 2 a.m. or so.

Ann, Dale, Todd, Laz: Congratulations -- you wrote great stories and deserve to be in the next round.

Lisa: So you're only sorry that JC isn't on the list? Not June and I? Are we second-rate Wombats or what? (Snicker. Maybe you can come up with a respectable save on that one.)

I have had a busy morning and afternoon giving golf lessons. Who knew it could be so ... rewarding? But, help me out with something? Does it really seem right that I should have to pay the students?

Hi Vivian. Good theme for the holiday season. Just checking in as we are getting hit by our first real snowstorm in the east. Back later to read the thread.

Dale, glad to see Char made it into round 2. A healthy wisdom of wombats in this round - go, go, go!

I don't want your money, Dave. Give my share to Jules. Now show me how to use this pitching wedge again.

Dave, JC, I thought your chapters were fine and could have progressed. Hang in there and pursue other ways to get them published.

June, congrats for putting your work out there. Your attitude was excellent and this experience should help your writing, just as FC1 and FCR helped many of the other wombats (including moi).

Simon, I should explain that late one night, in the final rounds of FC1, I got a manuscript in the email and spent most of a night reviewing. Since then, I've been priviledged to get revisions of DW sometimes.
