George Mitchell is a former Congressman who has kept busy since retiring with a long string of assignments from Presidents, commissions, etc. One of his tougher tasks was to hammer out a peace agreement in Northern Ireland. His latest chore has been to investigate the steroid abuse problems of pro baseball. When the report comes out tomorrow, LOOK OUT, because it is supposed to name a number of active or retired players who abused steroids, possibly as many as 60 0r 70 names. Yes, it does go well beyond the names of Bonds, McGwire, Canseco, and Giambi.
I hope that Mitchell will tell the truth, and I suspect that he will. The truth is that there were two parties to a conspiracy of silcence in this matter. The first party was the players union, which dropped the ball of allowing its members to be kept drug free. The second party was the owners, who failed in their duty to do the same, because all those big steroid pumped arms were hitting alot of home runs, and what is good for the fans is good for the owners. Actually, a conspiracy of two is ideal. Three is a crowd, when it comes to conspiracies. But even with only two participants, eventually somebody is going to talk. I have not attended a professional baseball game in over ten years. I am waiting for all the steroid abusers to get out of the game, and I would also like an apology from the owners. How long of a wait do you think I have ahead of me?
