So here's a "what would you suggest" question that I need some help with in regards to my daughter (who will be 5 in January).
The preschool where the kids go have a collection bin for Toys for Tots -- which I think is great. Alex saw the box the other day and asked me -- "If Santa brings toys to all good girls and boys, why do they collect toys?" We've talked, in the past, about kids whose families can't afford things (even our own at times) and I encourage the children to help us with donating food, clothing, toys, etc. to events and organizations throughout the year. Our own budget is very tight but I always try to set an example for our kids of helping, even in small ways, those who have even greater needs then our own.
So what would you suggest? I mumbled a vague answer but I know she wasn't satisfied with it and the question will come up again soon -- she is nothing if not persistent!

Tell her that it gives others a chance to give and share at Christmas time too. To be Santa in their own special way.
He likes the idea of being santa since he is a celeberity.
But, I know how 5 yr olds are... if you don't give him an answer he likes he will keep asking the question.
You're right Victoria that I don't want to burst her bubble about Santa quite yet -- although I suspect that she will figure it out sooner then later knowing her! But I like your suggestion about others getting to be Santa in their own special way -- that's a great way to put it!
And Dawne you've made a good point about how Toys for Tots could work with Santa and his elves -- a joint venture so to speak. That would appeal to her I suspect.
I like your answer also Monica -- it would let her see the direct impact of donating a toy to help other families.
I think a combination of these would satisfy her -- and get me off the hook so to speak -- at least for a while! Wait till you hear about her question about the tooth fairy!!! The things they don't warn you about when you become a parent :-)
Just kidding.
That's a tough one. You could say, "That's just to help Santa out. Christmas is a time for doing nice things, and it's nice to help Santa out."
Happy holidays
Jesus, the Reason for the Season!
Merry Christmas to you and yours!
First you are a fine example. Thank you for raising your children with such values.
Second, great suggestions! All I could think of was to tell her that Santa can always use help!
