When teaching students of Spanish
To write with poetry
You'd think I'd poured pure hot latex
Over their naked brains
As soon as I'd announced
The lesson of the day
Instantly assuming failure,
I lead them through a form
Impersonal expression for a starter,
"It's unlikely that" something might happen
Requires the subjunctive, in a two-line poem
How to find a rhyme in your second language
That is a challenge, not to mention this is grammar
So I unveil the wonder of the rhyming dictionary
The on-line tool poetry enables
But the best idea was not mine
Add a little clip art to these two-line wonders
Put it all together and here is the rhyme:
Temprano rhymes with guano, early and poop
Add a bat to the page and students start to see
This teacher may be crazy but there's possibility
Es preferible que vayas a la oficina temprano
Alguien te espera con churros y guano

It's preferible that you go (might go) to the office early
Someone waits for you with cinnamon sticks and guano
A correction--that should probably be cinnamon bread sticks.
Jessie--thanks a lot, as I am deeply humor challenged, and what really triggered this was Minnie W. and I starting a humor project. So I am more inspired than ever.
Thanks for the fun rhyme - I'll share with my hispanic kids by asking them to translate - hopefully we'll all get a big laugh.
I know exactly what that second language problem is. Things are very weird in any new language. The idioms and pronunciations are so different.
But you found the way !!! Wonderful. You made a difference and that's what counts.
Is preferably that go to the early office Someone expects you with fritters and guano.
If you can have a little fun and make the learning go easier, more power to you. Thanks for sharing.
Fred--you should know, you Afrikaans veteran (sp?) Thank you telling me I made a difference.
Sandy--I guess that tells you something about free translation websites, and thanks for seeing the laughter inside this!
Kathryn--I hope it inspired you somehow, though you seem to carry your own supply aplenty!
Jan--I never would have thought of this as a little space; I would have thought it too extensive. Do you still have those French songs or other poetry? I don't know that I could read it, but I'd like to try, and de nada!
Es probable que haya muchos maestros con alma,
pero creo yo que Gerry se lleva la palma.
It´s probable that there are many teachers with soul,
but I believe that Gerry wins the gold.
Wait..let me do something.. :)
Be back soon!
"Bien que mon cerveau dans l'anticipation nue, attendent des pensées poétiques,
Son votre visage de poker, monsieur, qui me fait penser beaucoup"
Gerry, methinks you have started off pretty well!! Hope we enjoy this new venture!
Minnie, I am reluctant to go to a dictionary while I have time at lunch to read, so I can only get part of this:
Well that my_____in the anticipation ____, waiting on poetic thoughts,
On your poker face, sir, that makes me think too much
Please let me know if I got close at all!
Ed, those words mean a lot. I guess I am pretty devoted to my vocation, but then aren't most of us who write poetry on Gather?
If I remember it exactly as I wrote it, then this is how it went,
My brain waits, in naked anticipation, for poetic thoughts
But it is your poker face, sir, that makes me think a lot.
Hope you saw the funny side in this ;)
What if I were one of your students, attempting to write poetry in Spanish, wondering as you explained, looking at your enthusiasm and zeal and rather than writing good poetry, ended up giving you this?? :P :P Would I have been thrown out of the class, SIR?
Atticus--I don't know how many will remember me. The teacher never really knows, but thanks for the thought!
John--indeed! One has to be at least a little mad to teach and I wish I could be even crazier so my classes were laughing all the time.
This is inspired teaching at its best, dear friend.
Bhawana--if you could learn enough Spanish to understand the general idea, it would be a powerful adventure for you!
You provoked the teacher's needs and worries too.. which I tend to have too..
Cause being a teacher is demanding...yet EXCITING..lol..
Who cares, as long as you can pull them in and they learn without knowing it, you've done a better job than most--right???(agree with me, it's just a good idea lately).
Maybe you should do it as a clean limmerick?(And don't ask me to spell it right, it'll just frustrate me).
Raven Spirit--as always, you are so very generous with me and I am thankful for your inspiration.
