I survived driving on ice!

The weather seems to have led to a chronic below freezing temperature and I finally broke down and decided to head out and try to get some groceries. I was at the point where I was eating cereal dry since I didn't have any milk. I also learned that a friend of mine has eaten cereal with water (sounds pretty strange to me). How about you? Have you had to deal with any weather/season related driving?

Nothing significant this year so far. I have driven in pretty bad snowstorms / blizzards before. One year, a blizzard hit on April 1, yes you read that right. I was carpooling with a friend of mine and it was her turn to drive, which was good because she had a four wheel drive truck. It took us 8 hours to get home (it was normally an hour drive). We were stuck on the interstate for four hours (the state closed the road).

Dealing with driving on snow and ice is included in Michigan Drivers' Ed 101. Try to stock up before the snow comes, but when you must drive in snow, remember to leave enough stopping space and take it slow. I hate the anti-lock breaks, which don't work as well as the kind we could pump.
On ice, you cannot break adequately and you're lucky if you can steer. Stay off the roads when they're icy, at least until the salt trucks have made progress.
KEEP A BAG OF SAND OR ROCK SALT IN YOUR TRUNK.

my husband and daughter can't have milk so they use juice. Sounds weird to me but I have done water before.

I am from the midwest, ice, snow it doesn't scare me. BRING IT ON! :-)

Glad you made it..we have icy/freezing rain here tonight and I was considering going out for groceries too..Tough to tell if its safe even though it's right down the road..And I've eaten dry cereal many a time :)

I like to stay home on days like that. If it's snowing, I'd rather walk than drive, but we're close enough we can go to the store, etc. Ice is a different story. I'm glad you survived! You may want to consider buying a small container of instant nonfat dry milk,
if you can stand the taste, for such occasions. Mix it and chill it well before using. It's better than water on cereal!!!

Not as bad as you had to do..The other day we had a really down pour of rain nothing like snow and i was out in it got soaked and my box with christmas present did get went the presents were fine....I have been in snow before getting stuck in it wearing high heels at a wedding when it decides to snow wasn't fun either.LOL

raining right now, it is suppose to turn to sleet soon as predicted by the all knowing weatherman!
I don't mind driving in bad weather, its the other guys I am worried about!

My husband drives on icy roads every day. They don't plow our roads out here, and it doesn't get warm enough to melt the snow and ice. So it's stayed put since before Thanksgiving. He has put salt on the worst spots now.

I've driven in terrible snowstorms, ice storms etc. while living up North. Here in the South we get ice maybe once a year, and I'm the first one out the door to drive in it!!

I never ate cereal with water. Last Monday there were fender benders all over the state. Fortunately, no one I know had a problem. Knock on wood because the season has only just begun. We are due for more ice tomorrow morning. :-(

Heh heh, I'm an expert. Here in Michigan we're forced to drive on sheets of ice in the dead of winter, because of the way the temperature will plummet when the sun goes down. Sometimes salting doesn't occur until the next day, so what choice do we have?

never but sometime it might happen. They are scaring us about the bird flu and to keep two weeks worth of food and water, plus meds and pet food, on hand in case they close everything public in our town.

I had to deal with the ice last Saturday with no heat in my car. I was so scared, the ice kept freezing on my windshield, I pulled over four times to scrap the ice from my windshield.

If there is no milk i just eat it dry!!!!! LOL as for driving around, I had to drive in the snow and ice to get to work the other day. Thank goodness it is onily 6 miles and no highway! Now I won't be driving again for a while, I don't even fit in my car for goodness sakes! WIth my torn meniscus! OUCH. I cannot bend my knee it is completely immobilized straight. I can get into my hubby's van but I cannot drive!

Snow, slush, ice, yep driven in it. I even took my driving test in December! I'm in the Northwest here so icey roads are usual. You usually have to watch out for the moron drivers who think their invincible.

I have been in an accident from black ice on a road trip with my parents from MT to WA...It was on an overpass & my 1st thought was..."please don't go off the bridge PLEASE don't go off the bridge...!" We hit the guardrail on the side that didn't have the drop, then we slid to the other side that DID have the drop & I was sooo scared & the guard rails held in place & we didn't go over. I felt like we were soooo blessed!

Then when I was living in WA state I was driving on this busy 4 lane road & I was driving my dad's little squeaker truck...and all of a sudden the truck started spinning & it was crazy, because I ended up in the suicide lane (the middle lane) and that was where I did a 180...It was in that lane the whole time! I felt lucky because that lane was the only one that wasn't occupied! I have no idea how I got into that lane either! haha. I was just blessed ;o)

Oh & when WA had the ice storm yeah I still had to go to work...I still don't get that haha ;o) We were a die hard operation I guess LOL. (It was a call center & our East Coast offices would close for the silliest things! The Southern offices would close for an inch of snow & we had to come to work during ICE STORM!)

It is a rule here to buy what we need before the storm hits,, they warn you days in advance,,, they are already talking about tuesday ice/snow storm here

Dan I'm glad you went shopping after all!!! Just take your time, go slow, brake gently and always carry sand, deicer or cat litter in your trunk. Buy an extra half gal. of milk and freeze it in case you can't get out to buy some before the next storm hits.

Do donuts on the ice. It's lots of fun as long as there are no other cars on the road. One time I drove in the snow about 20 miles and had to get pulled out of 3 ditches before I made it to my destination. HAVE FUN with it.

Glad to hear you finally braved the ice. I don't drive myself, but have been with other people in bad weather. Driving in fog so thick we had to stick our heads out the windows to make sure we were staying on the road, this happened 3 times. Driving in blinding snow, where we couldn't stick our heads out the windows, and just prayed the red light we were trying to follow was indeed another car and not a stop light blowing in the wind.

I have tried cereal with water before. I didn't too much care for it.

Glad you are safe! When we moved from Iowa to Kentucky our neighbors were surprised at the weather we would drive in. It was funny, we would get phone calls asking us if we were going to the store and if so if we could pick up specific items!

Seriously Dan, be careful, the weather is rough in your neck of the woods.

I'm in Fl so no ice here, thank God! But I did live in Ohio for about 6 months (that's all I lasted!) So I learned to drive on ice & in snow! Ohh what fun! I was so nervous I coulda used a whole bottle of Xanax! LOL :)

I am in Florida, so I don't expect to be having that problem...but could you imagine? Oh my...what a disaster that would be for all these people here that have never seen ice or snow...there would just be one big accident out there on the roads! I grew up in Illinois, and learnedto drivein the ice and snow, so I think I would do alright, but it had been six years now!

It's been raining here so I've had to deal with that. I don't mind it, but apparently rain brings out the worst in drivers. People either drive way too slow so no one gets anywhere or they drive too fast causing accidents in the worst areas. And they never do it when you're casually driving, it's always when you need to be somewhere.

I get out before the roads get bad to buy food etc etc. Like if I see that a day will be better than another I will get scooting. I remember saying a little prayer under my breath last week when the children left for school. My stepdaughter most likely was driving too fast when she went into a ditch. This was the first time that she drove in very bad weather since she got her drivers license. My prayer was keep the children safe and my prayer was answerd, she didn't get hurt or do the fence any damage:)

we have 2 4X4s and William is an very safe driver, we use to camp in the winter.
Oh goodness, living at 7,000 feet up we're always dealing with winter driving! It's ridiculouse and even after living here for years it still scares the junk out of me!

Yep just Sat night went an hour and a half out of my way in a blizzard to cater a christmas party, never got tipped, only worked three and a half hours, got lost, almost spun out and killed and was it worth it for a few bucks an hour, HECK NO ! But my latest driving peeeve is this
Throw them in Jail already !
