I get him a package of fast food resturant certificates...like one year it was McDonalds, the next year was Burger King and so on.
Simply becuase these are easy to use, he can just drive up in his mail truck and eat his lunch in the truck as he drives.....since most don't get a lunch because their timed on delivering mail [hubby use to be a mailman is how I know this] and what I do is make it a point to wait for him then run out and hand it to him in a Christmas card and wish him a Merry Christmas personally. For the times I can't be there I tape [with a strong duct tape in winter] it to the OUTSIDE of the DOOR and clearly mark on it "FOR MY MAILMAN" OR "MAIL CARRIER".
It's always a nice gesture and he's always more then happy to bring me my big packages right to my hands during the year becuase he knows who appreciates him, at the holidays. Good question.

I researched the etique of this a few years ago, anyone you see regularly for service- such as your hair dresser= that is customarily tipped, your gift should be a doubled tip
People that work for you that you "pay" directly (such as landscaper, babysitter, etc..) shoud get a monitary gift.
People that serve you that you don't pay (such as police, teachers, mailman, UPS)- should get a gift to show your appreciation- the value dependant on how oftan they serve you.
But since I've never seen my mail person and don't know if its a man or woman- I just leave baked goods. My UPS guy only comes like 4 times a year, so I get him something like a coffee gift bag. My busdriver (son's school) I get Christmas decorations. My son's teacher and teacher aides I got the holiday coffee/tea sets you see around- with tea pot and cups.
THis year I'm giving them organizers for 2008.
I think a Borders card would be nice, even if he doesn't read they have cd's and dvd's too plus other little gift items.
