A Journey To Niagara Falls

My husband and I decided to visit Niagara Falls with our daughter and snap a few pictures to share on Gather. We found a parking space in one of the FREE sections and when we crossed the street we were immediately facing the American Falls.  It was very cold and we had to walk quite a distance to reach the Canadian/Horseshoe Falls. After taking many pics we retreated back to the car to warm up. Niagara Falls is especially beautiful to me in the winter and I hope you enjoy these pictures.

Nice photos, Carrie! I went to Niagara Falls once, way back in the 70's, but the day I was there it was so foggy you couldn't see a single thing.

I was there in January or February 1976. (I was living in Toronto.) It was beautiful. All the trees were covered with ice. Growing up in Montana, I had never seen ice-covered trees. Funny thing, in Oregon when it is really cold and below freezing, it is often clear and dry. When warmer, wetter air blows in off the Pacific, the cold air stays trapped at the surface and the moisture falls as rain that freezes on the trees and EVERYTHING! It's called a Silver Thaw.

I have been distracted the last week by rain and wind, and busy with family...so I have not been on Gather. So I am just getting back to catching up on everyone else's stuff. I missed a lot of good pictures and articles. Thanks for posting...keep it up!
I have not yet visited Niagara Falls.

Thanks for sharing Carrie! I grew up an hour from the falls and haven't been to see them in many years. I especially liked it in the winter also. They are so grand!

I want to go there! I wonder how the falls formed...that would be interesting to me to learn...I think I will google the Niagra falls haha ;o) Cause I am nerdy like that LOL

So a lot of it was formed during the ice age. A Whirlpool (if I understood correctly) is what caused the falls to make a 90 degree curve. Pretty interesting stuff! There was a website that I went to that had some neat facts! http://www.niagarafallslive.com/Facts_about_Niagara_Falls.htm

Oh & now I am going to look up Victoria Falls in Southern Africa (the largest recorded waterfall in the world) Niagara is the 2nd largest....
