Sierra Club is reporting that Pelosi will introduce the energy bill in the House this week, including CAFE standards of 35 mpg by 2020. In releasing her press statement, Pelosi said, "This comprehensive package will also include an increase in the Renewable Fuels Standard and a Renewable Electricity Standard, among other key provisions." I'm assuming that means the meager 15% Renewable Portfolio Standard and the tax incentives for renewables that stood to be dropped from the bill a couple of weeks ago.
I will continue to look for information of this development and post relevant information in the comment section, for those interested.

That's nice
Help me get a publishing deal with a 10 rating and a comment. I comment back.
I'm close, my Dodge P.U. gets 14 MPG.
Good News?
I guess we'll see if the Dems are putting together an energy bill the President will accept or they are just sending him something they know he will veto so the can call him mean, evil and nasty.
Hardly - not when we have to send the military to the mideast to protect oil supply. Driving a car that gets 10 mpg is close to treason. Also, driving a car that gets 10 mpg helps drive up the cost of gas. I should sue you for damages! Finally, this energy bill would not prevent you from driving your unpatriotic gas-guzzler. It would force the auto industry to manufacture a fleet of vehicles that "average" 35 mpg. That why it's called the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards (CAFE). So stop with the distortions, already!
They're sending him a bill that will affect ghgs and national security/energy dependence. Why would he veto it?
Yes, of course. How else is Osama going to continue funding his al Qaeda unless we continue handing our debt dollars over to Saudi royals to fund our addiction to foreign oil? After all, it's far more important that you maintain your right to buy a vehicle with crappy gas mileage than for the US to maintain any semblence of national security.
Perhaps, you should consider buying used Hummers that get 4 mpg, once the new ones come out that get 15 or so? Everybody else can drive the ones with 4-5 times the mileage, and you can drive their old gas hogs. That might work for you. I don't see anything anywhere saying that your precious gas hogs are going to be banned from roadways.
Why don't you just buy an old school bus?
"Why would he veto it?"
Because they load it up with a lot of other stuff, which they know he won't accept.
SOP for the Dem's.
"The White House has said repeatedly that if the energy legislation singles out the oil companies for new taxes, advisers would recommend that President Bush veto the bill."
The bill,
"calls for repealing $13.5 billion in tax breaks given to major oil companies in 2004 and 2005"
They already knew beforehand it would be vetoed.
You're kind of short on specifics there, Dan. But this is the likely reason he'll veto it:
"The Congressional Democratic leadership will soon bring to the floor a comprehensive set of policies to drive clean energy into the coming decades which face the risk of a presidential veto by including $21 billion in tax incentives paid for by repealing oil and gas industry subsidies."
But why would he veto it? He has said himself that "America is addicted to oil." You think subsidies to the fossils should be continued, even though they're raking in record profits?
Dan: "They already knew beforehand it would be vetoed."
Perhaps. But I think it is the right thing to do to put this ball in w.'s court. Let him reject renewables - on the record. Let republicans line up behind him. Let's get it out there for everyone to see. Who knows, maybe w. will back down. Maybe enough republicans, who think renewables are worth it and w. is not, will join democrats and override the veto. Why would you oppose this legislation?
Energy Bill Update: A Washington Insider's View
"President Bush and some leading Republican Senators have voiced strong opposition to the $21 billion in tax incentives for renewables, paid for by repealing subsidies for the fossil energy industries. There are also concerns over the RPS, which has been vigorously opposed by some powerful utilities."
Ten unsolicited points from the world's worst connection. Merry whatever you celebrate!
