Musicheads talk about the releases from The Hives, Babyshambles, and Sigur Ros

We reviewed a handful of "straggler releases" this week as the new releases season for 2007 draws to a close, including "The Black and White Album" from Swedish power-popsters The Hives; Pete Doherty and his new band Babyshambles' "Shotters Nation" (with ample co-songwriting credit given to his girlfriend, Kate Moss), and then (for something completely different), the new "double EP" of live and previously unreleased stuff from the Icelandic ensemble Sigur Ros, "Hvarf/Heim" (gorgeous and haunting stuff that's just in time for winter, we agreed).

 Mark Wheat and Danny Sigelman were my guests.

I like Sigur Ros in small doses. I heard a nice piece off this on a podcast today that was pretty sweet. I may have to check their new one out more in depth.

I like the Hives new records, despite a couple of less than accessible tracks. It's one of those records that is still growing on me.

I also dig some Sigur Ros, but have been disappointed in their last album, which I didn't really get into....

Let's see, a Swedish band, a Icelandic band... you guys should have picked a Finish band and you could have had a Nordic theme show... To bad the new Flaming Sideburns record hasn't been released in the states yet..

Thank you all for checkin in! Soundscapem n...I agree with you...depending on how much you consider a "small dose"... I LOVE putting on a Sigur Ros CD and letting it play all the way through. It is such an adventure to listen to their releases start to finish. Though I wouldn't want to make it a full day Sigur Ros affair!

I do hope I never have to interview them!

Yo Eric P...I'm with you we should have featured a Finnish band. We coulda done my favorite....Laika and the Cosmonauts!!

I love the comment made about sigur ros' stuff reminding them of stormy nights or sunsets, when I saw them at the Boston Pavillion, which is a tent, it was during an intense rain storm, our feet got wet but it was the perfect background noise for this band. Every time the music would get quiet the sound of the rain hitting the tent would take over, Perfect.

that Sigur Ros show you guys mentioned in the podcast I knew about, wanted to attend, but it was also the same evening that Coheed and Cambria/Avenged Sevenfold were playing in Maplewood. However, I ended up skipping both shows because it was bad storm that night; kind of ironic actually as you mention Sigur Ros's music evoking climate and weather.

I find their stuff, like the () album works really well on an air plane when I want to shut my eyes and relax (or nap). TAKK I checked out maybe 6 months ago at work 1 day and started getting bored kinda fast. I think they're probably one the most mood-bands for me; and/or I need to figure out what of their material would be worth going back to more often. For what they are..they are great. Maybe 1 of the most respected "Post Rock" band so-to-speak. I just haven't been able to go apeshit over them, like some I know.

One thing I can already tell: Like Eric, I think The Hives album is going to grow on me.

Yo Soundscapem...thanx for the idea reagarding listening to Sigur Ros on an airplane. I always need music to calm my nerves.

Sigur Ros's Jonsi's guitar and bow sound often reminds me of a jet taking off!

Hmm. Well, I dunno what to say about Pete Doherty and his Babyshambles, which is a good reason for me not to be on the air. Which musichead said something like, "I don't find myself wanting to hear it..."? Because I'm sadly feeling that. I don't want to. Someone, save it.

Bill, your reaction to Sigur Ros was quite poetic. Their work is really transforming, and their interview was totally wince-inducing.

Yeah Julia...I agree with you regarding Babyshambles. It does appear for the moment that Mr Doherty is at least heading in the right direction.

Anybody else disappointed that the Hives toured w/Maroon 5?

I have some friends who dig Maroon 5; personally I have not heard enough of them to know how I feel.

You know that the Hive touring with Maroon 5 doesn't bother me, so they get to rock out for a bunch of proto-yuppie mom's, fine, all I have to say is Back up the Money Truck...

Upon further review....OK then...I am not a fan of Maroon 5, but I must give 'em props for allowing a band known for their relentlessly rockin live show to open for them & not being afraid of being (tick, tick, tick, boom) blown off stage!

Hey Bill, Mark and Danny, seem to have hit a cord with this show and some great commentary. I got some good insight on all three bands from the show. I knew the least about Sigur Ros and have some investingating to do, thanks. One thing I want to comment on is Mark's strong feeling about 2007 being the year that the album died. He states on his year emd list and has mentioned it other times on air. I find myself agreeing with that more and more. With so many ways to preview and listen online it's easy to size up an album and cherry pick the ones you want to download. When it comes down to it is rare that I find more than 2-3 songs I really like from even some of my favorite artists. It will be interesting to see how 2008 shapes up on this front.
