Am I too presumptuous to dare talk about writing a poem? I have no training in the science of poetry and do not know technical words associated with poetry. A comment was made to a poem I wrote saying I write tight quatrains. A quatrain was a new fangled word. Qua means four, but train is a form of transportation. My poem mentioned nothing about trains. I was dumbfounded, so I asked my wife, a Literature Major, what a quatrain was. She had no clue, so I asked my 15 year old dog, but she wanted a treat before answering. To me this was an outrageous bribe. My wife was watching and told me I had lost my marbles. Well, I decided to look up the term and found a site for people dumber than a dog. Once I understood this term, I felt qualified for talking to you about how to write a good poem.
However, not to show too much paranoia, I fear a student out there will be reading this and his ‘poet’ mom will have this reaction: ‘Herbert, you stop reading that at once.’ ‘John, John’, calling to her husband, who comes rushing into the room. ‘Look at this radical nonsense ‘your’ son is reading.’ John looks and says, ‘Oh my gosh darn golly’ and just sadly shakes his head and says, ‘Son, go play with your Wii.’ After Herbert leaves, John says, ‘Do you think he needs counseling? No telling how long he has been reading this smut.’ His wife just shakes her head and says, ‘I’ll take him to see the doctor tomorrow. There must be some kind of drug to help him. No telling how far over the edge he’s gone.’ With a pensive look and a far away look in her eyes, she looks at John and says, ‘This has given me an idea for a poem.’ John waits until she leaves, then grabs the laptop to enjoy this article in his reading room.
I would probably write better poetry, if I knew more about the science of poetry and had a ‘Reena’ coffee maker for the perfect cup of coffee.. However, all the poetic scientific knowledge in the world does not mean you will be a good poet. A good poem has that elusive term called quality that stirs some kind of emotional reaction. Really good poems are like a beautiful sunset, or a beautiful painting that causes a feeling of appreciation. A good poem is art and the scientific aspects are secondary. I’m sure my last statement is a red flag to some purists. Most purists have their noses so high the air that they may be the reason for possible UFO sightings. I’ve read good poems by people who do not consider themselves poets, but yet wrote a poem that sparkled with imagination.
Some poets can sit down and craft out a poem just from sheer intellect. I guess me being feral doesn’t help. 99% of my poems come from out of the blue. I can be sitting at my kitchen table cutting out coupons, or saying my ’Yes, Dear' mantra to my wife and verses for a poem just pop in my head, sort of like the guy thinking about Arby’s. I have no idea when or why these ideas come. I write in quatrains in rhyme and each line has an equal number of syllables. I know my method sounds difficult, but it drives me. I tear at my hair trying to find the right word, but luckily it’s my underarm hair. In my next article, I will talk about methods and vital points in fashioning poetic verse. As for style, does it really matter?

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure you can be an educated savant, grammatically speaking. Being a savant usually means you access universal knowledge without really trying, sort of like clipping coupons. I suggest you move on to cinquains.
Grammar is a bit of a weakness, but it's not something I fret about.
those who are eager to know that all of sudden why there's Reena n her coffee maker episode ..well this plot was emerged on my drabble and I am so lucky to recieve wonderful drabbles.

Because I'm an auditory and not a visual person, I go more by sound than form.
Your poems make lovely music.
Ergo, you are a very gifted poet.
For the record, when my son was a baby, we rented a farm for 7 months.
And you know, it was VERY poetic! I wish I had been writing somewhere, other than just my head in those days.
I wrote that and sat here thinking of that farm. How it was magical and horrific all at the same time. Time passes so quickly....
I think poetry falls in my lap like a lump of rock with an image hidden somewhere inside. Once it's fallen it's heavy and I have to do something. Then I chip away at the words till the image appears.
Hmm. Maybe rocks falling out the sky isn't such a good image...
I agree that theory does get in the way sometimes. Theory is basically conceptualism based on facts, possible facts and probable outcomes. Real understanding and growth comes from critical thinking and utilization. Your teacher was right. Today's teachers are bound and gagged by having to teach only facts and concepts for rote oriented aptitude tests.
It's something that I know very little about. Ok ok I do write poetry but I know nothing about it. I just write. It comes from somewhere and I hope that I never find out where...because then the fountain may dry up.
For me it's mainly the coffee that does it. So Reena...come on do you have another cup please???
Enjoyable read and very true...just go with your gut, have fun, get it out, you just have to sometimes or you'll burst.
Would you write a poem about my latest discovery, "Hirsute Hogs"?
I love it more than the message itself...welll for now..till part two...
I thought that a 'quatrain' was something about four drunk Leprechauns legless on a train, which goes to show that I know nothing about poetry....sigh.
Ten stars from me, my friend.
go with the dog..the dog will never steer you wrong...
Never question genius. You've got it in buckets. And when you've spent that you can always fall back on talent!
it's God given..or Coffee inspired( That Reena coffee is so powerful I cannot imagine sitting long enough to even log on after one swallow!)
That 'qua' train might jump the track..just like Amtrak ,or always late, don't have much more faith in a 'cinq' train..that '5th'wheel doesn't sound too safe on the rails....
but ,then again, perhaps that '5th'wheel has very special place....like in the 'anal' of history?
now..what did you do with those 100 words you cut and can I have them? From what I've read your discards, surely, are way better than my posted 'stuff'.
How so very true and no, it doesn't matter the style or the name or anything. As long as it is moving with emotions. Your poems may come to you outta the blue and you may search and search for the right word to define your feelings, but they are original and meaningful. That's what matters.
Sometimes I so badly want to sit and pen out my emotions. I just honestly do not have the patience to seperate my feelings long enough to write about them in a poem. What was supposed to be a poem, ends up being an article, such as my last one about being lonely. So, I give up on the poems and will just continue reading all of yours and Elsie's, and some others.
Have a great day!
What's the problem ? Engine stuff?(yeah, i know zip )
good luck!
"Quatrain is an old Irish biblical phrase meaning 'quart o' rain.' " That is so wacky, I think I'm going with the idea I was asleep. I had it fully developed into some sort of thought that I felt I should immediately get up on write as a comment here. Fortunately, I did not do that!
I was drawn to your article about quatrains. I remember studying about them in a poetry class I took a few years ago. Along those lines, I have a few suggestions! Have you ever considered writing an EPITHALAMIUM poem? (from an ancient Greek word meaning "upon the bridal chamber"). It's a poem that celebrates marriage. Or what about a MADRIGAL poem, written to be set to music? Perhaps a SESTINA, from the Latin sextus, which means "sixth." This form is based on sixes and is the ideal writing style for a mathematical mind! I myself had no idea there were so many different poetic forms. As a writer, I don't "fit" into any of these literary traditions. I personally favor writing narrative poems or free verse. I think writers of today are fortunate in that we can pretty much choose to write in whatever style suits us. We aren't expected to write ODES or SONNETS or VILLANELLES like poets in the past were required to write.
Now that I have discovered you here on Gather, I'll be back!
I am too lazy to use forms. Though I play tunes that are pretty "square" (8 measures in each part) my brain doesn't seem to work that way with words. Yet I hear the cadence of spoken conversation in the music, and the music in spoken conversation. I believe music and poetry/songs have been written from both directions.
P.S. Does drinking Dandelion Wine make any difference?
