I am reading a book by Antoine Faivre, 'The eternal Hermes' translated and re-edited by Joscelyn Godwin.
At a certain point he refers to that immortal painting by Botticelli, 'La Primavera', Spring Time! At the left there is a young Hermes amidst the three Graces, showing upwards towards Heaven (from our standing point of view on Earth.) I observe in that composition that the three Graces not only assign the three-folding of Hermes (Hermes Trismegistons) but also, together with his figurethey design a spiral ascending movent (of our evolution). But Monsieur Antoine Faivre makes me notice in his book that at the right side of the painting there is Hermes again, disguised as Zephyr. In this painting, according to Antoine Faivre, there is a whole cycle of movemnts between the upper and the lower world, between the visible and invisible world. Hermes is the catalyst of wonders, Hermes is our guide through these worlds. Hermes is ascending and inviting us to follow, as at the left side. And Hermes is re-entering through the right side, descending from the Air into the Element and Palnet of Earth.
This magician of our days, the esoteric Master per excellence, Antoine Faivre, says that Hermes was particularly celebrated in the Renaissance as the comunicator of secret knowledge, of esoteric meanings, of the mysteries of natural environment and human thought. But he was celebrated also for a subtle and very important detail. He expresses 'the opening of the chanels of knowledge', as Antoine Faivre is putting it; he re-activates the channels of knowledge after centuries of obstruction and deformation by the almighty worldly power of Vatican.
At a certain point Antoine recalls a Renaissance text according to which Hermes is a Lyre. That reminds me of the name of the girl in the cinematographic film 'The Golden Compass' based on the trilogy by Pullman-Utram, 'Dark Material'.
When I finish my current readings I will get these books. For the moment we were watching a DVD that agve us a thorough presentation of the books and the film. The girl Lyre is hermes; she is the catralyst that with ehr thirst for knowledge takes us with her through her serpentine paths of research and let us see and think!
