Traditional music

I just watched a video posted by Margaret C. (http://weemam.gather.com/ ) of bagpipers playing near Loch Lomond in Scotland. It was beautiful and stirring but it got me thinking. Scotland has bagpipe music, Ireland has the Irish reel and other Irish/Celtic music, Mississippi (my home) has the blues and the birth of rock and roll, New Orleans (& Chicago, New York, & Kansas City) has jazz. But I look back at my heritage and wonder...

What is the traditional music of the Netherlands (Holland)?

I love the sound of the bagpipes :)

I've heard that some of the traditional music from Holland is folk and celtic too :)

Folk and Celtic, huh? I would love to know the Dutch take on Celtic music....

All I know of Dutch music is from my family heritage, which is steeped in Dutch Reformed and Christian Reformed church tradition. I thought that Dutch music was only hymns! LOL ; )

My father was good friends with some dutch people when I was growing up and I learned how to speak some dutch, not fluently but enough to confuse someone. LOL

there is nothing so moving as the sound of the pipes. Especially when they play Amazing Grace. When i hear them it takes me home to my native Scotland.

Maria, I definitely agree that Amazing Grace is amazing on bagpipes. If you caught the NASCAR race on Veteran's Day, they had pipers playing it as part of the opening ceremonies.

Although I am 100% Dutch-American, I am sold on both bagpipe and Irish music.

My most favourite lament on the pipes and which is commonly played at Scottish funerals is 'The Flo'ers o the Forest'. It is a truly haunting piece of pipe music.

I am 100 per cent Scottish, not even a drop of Irish blood....
