You built
something that floated in the bathtub
something motorized that amazed me.
Everyone gave me
a hard time for buying
such an expensive Christmas gift
for such a little tyke.
and when you asked
for the bathtub to be filled
even I doubted for a moment.
I've never doubted since
that you could build
once you had decided.
Even in the face
of your own doubts.
I knew.

Raising children is the hardest job in the world, bar none. It is not so much the parents' doubts but the child's own self-doubts. Among the countless jobs of a parent is that of cheerleader. So even with your doubts, it sounds like you continued to cheer. What else does any kid need after the loyal support of a parent?

Very cool -- love those science toys! I think my late grandma once bought me some kind of plastic ferry boat from a catalog or Chicago (can't remember which). I always try to keep well-stocked with educational toy catalogs, to get Kali off on a good start. Our whole family is very much into science and nature, too. Thanks for sharing this and stay creative you guys!

You captured a treasured moment with this poem and generously shared it with us at Gather.

It's funny our kids will tell us what they need if only we will pay attention. When my oldest was a babe she begged me to teach her to read. I refused to be a parent that pushed a child. Later, she told me how angry she was that when she started school that there was one boy who knew how to read. I should have listened to my daughter and not revolted against all the "super" parents who were pushing their kids. I should have taught her how to read, letting her lead the way.

Trish, there are so many should haves and would haves with parenting. We do the best we can at every turn, and trust our children to forgive us, as we did our parents as well. :)

At 33, he has grown into a man willing to share whatever he has with others in need. He is fearless in supporting those who are weaker, and will work tirelessly and in spite of self deprivation to accomplish necessary goals. He makes decisions, and accepts the consequences, and gets up after he falls. :) A deep sensitivity for the frailty in others make him an inspiration to many, myself included. :)

Debbie, I can tell from this little poem how much love and pride you have for your son, and I love and respect that, it is nice that you remember him as a child, because even though they get bigger than us and stronger than us, they are our babies always in our hearts, and the pride stems from knowing we carried them and gave them life and that he is a wonderful man, now is a tribute to you, thank you for sharing this with us here.
