The Skater
by Marianne McNamara
When blue twilight wrapped the house
and I waited for the rest of them
to come back from school and jobs and errands
(strange that I should be there alone),
I heard frantic pounding, someone yelling help!
discovered our neighbor Annie at the door.
A skater had plunged through the thin ice
on the frozen lake out where the current ran fast and deep.
Annie pleaded for something to throw the woman.
Yanking, jerking, twisting, I tried to pull down Mother's clothesline
but it wouldn't come free. My hands shaking
and Annie screaming, Hurry, please hurry!
I finally tore the rope loose and she rushed it away.
