Why do people hate religion? What is religion? Some synonyms are faith, belief, or creed.
Some definitions are:
- Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
- A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
- The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
- A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.
- A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.
I think we are all religious by nature; even those that do not believe in God have religion.
What I think we find so offensive about religion is the people that are so devout. For example there are people so devout in their vegetarianism; that when you talk to them long enough, you realize anyone else that does not subscribe to this lifestyle is missing the boat and really causing themselves, their bodies, and the environment undue harm.
I think being devout is fine; but I think where we have the problem is the attitude that everyone else needs to be as devout as we are. Jesus said about these people the following in Matthew 6.5:
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
I dislike religion also when it is misused in this way.
James 1.27 says:
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
Where the rubber meets the road, what are we doing with our religion? If we are applying it to improve the lot of others as God our Father desires, I think people will be drawn to it; like they were to Mother Theresa or Billy Graham. If we use it to look good and win debates; we can be offensive to others and not draw anyone.
I have heard a saying that the best sermon is our acts of kindness, not our words of wisdom.

I don't think anybody really hates religion, in general.
It is the religious that they hate.
See definition #4 and my example about vegetarians that are so devout. Look at some of the people with PETA or some of the environmentalist. They are devoted to a cause and have made it a religion to some degree. And some of them are so obnoxious in their devotedness; that the offend others.
So; no you don't need to worship a supernatural god to be religious. That is why one of the command of God the Father in heaven said that we are to "have no other gods before me!" Worship of the environment, a certain lifestyle, rich and famous, animals or any other thing like this is not that dissimilar to the idol worship of pagans hundreds and thousands of years ago.
Love of God and Country/Nationalism at work.
Stalin also. A mix of atheism and Nationalism built around an ideology that had the religous fervor/frenzy of idolizing Stalin as if he were also so infalable as to carry out his purging agenda.
Above is a reference to Christianity.
I think this is just a phenomenon of this country. I don't think other countries necessarily lend the same support/benefits. Even without it, Christianity still grows in many other countries. Other faiths in this country have the same tax benefits as the "Christian" churches.
You also get tax benefits for giving to agencies such as American Cancer Society, United Way, Red Cross and other organizations that have no affiliations with churchs or religion. The incentive is a giving incentive and not a scam propagated by Christians.
I don't deny that some people have abused it; but not just in church organizations. Having said that; Christians should be setting a higher example and I also am offended and disappointed by the abuses. This also correlates to the physical/sexual abuse that is being uncovered in the Catholic church. Fiscal or Physical abuse should not be occurring in Christian organizations. But they do. Why? I will save it for another article; this comment is getting too long.
I will just point out that Jesus is our example and we are to live as much as possible like he did. I already know what Jesus did to people referred to in Lyndon's comment; he ran them out of the temple and told them they made his Father's house a den of thieves.
I really am sorry so many people cannot see Christ and his love for them because of people that call themselves Christians but do not live like and follow Christ as they should be.
a system of beliefs and practices based on truths that have become forgotten or have become known through authentic spiritual enlightenment, while lacking the capability of being provable from what has been accepted as factual by the community
For example, should a future people have no knowledge of cholesterol, the danger and avoidance of eating fatty foods might be a religion for them. Not for us, because we have scientific data to back up the claim. Without that, there exists the making of a religious value. (Perhaps this might figure into some of the Jewish dietary restrictions.)
Lyndon, I don't know if lea can answer that; but some of your comments lean toward "the break down of basic common civility".
The comment was not silly just because you disagree with it no more than your comments seem pointless because some of them make no sense to me?
People should feel threatened by religion; it requires a lifestyle change. But some of us need a lifestyle change.
But the other thing people hate about it is most religions declare themselves as the way (to whatever we hope to get to at the culmination of this life). Most of us don't want to be limited in this way and we rebel against it.
John 15:18
In my opinion, the reason religion causes so much friction is because of personal vies. We live in a society that prizes personal choice above all other things - to the point that MY personal choice is more important that YOUR personal choice OUR needs - even the needs of the majority. We have fractaled ourselves through the flags f diversity and political correctness to the point that the individual is all that matters - to each individual. In that, the concepts that most religions share - a higher power, placing the needs of others above oneself, etc. - have been diluted or lost.
And this is true of anyone who practices any discipline with a fervor. Have you never heard of someone who watches certain television shows "religiously"? Of someone who works our "religiously"?
As far as science replacing God, the truth is that science regularly shows us how intense and necessary God is. Despite the belief of modernists & post-modernists, science has never disproved God. God cannot be proved nor disproved; hence the need for faith.
The antagonism comes in when people start to believe that THEY have the power to save. Only the working of the Holy Spirit can save someone, but we as a culture ar so driven and motivated that we allow this attitude of self to bleed into our views of God. That allows us to make such misstatements as "all gods are the same"; "my personal god is the only real god - for me"; and "science has replaced God." I dislike it when people are so pushy that they try to convince me that their god is the only god - even those who believe themselves to be Christians. But condemning all because of that showed by deep-seated hatred for myself and others and came out as a misdirected and misguided attack on others who threatened me. In the end, it was the Holy Spirit who led me to where I am.
Not that I disagree in guiding others to Christ. It is my sincere prayer that people see His face in mine; that those who contact me will feel that I have allowed the love of Jesus to flow through me and that He has contacted them through me. But as was with me, I choose to leave the spiritual toolkit there for their disposal and pray that they will choose to use it. If not, it is no reflection of wither Jesus or me - it is a personal choice made by someone whose choice was different from mine - for now. But I also pray that if that ever changes that God allow me to be there for that person so that when the Spirit moves I will be able t share in the joy of their salvation. Not take credit for it - it was never mine to take credit for. But to share in the communal sense of love that the Holy Spirit offers.
If I saw you standing in front of a semi about to get run down in the street, I would scream until you got out of the way or got hit. I would, at least, have the common decency to try to save you from pain and death.
Why do so many people hate religion? Truth? Because their deeds are evil.
So they point out the evil deeds of every false religious person they've ever met to make themselves feel better. They don't want to think about the true definition of religion, which is, "To visit the widows and the fatherless and keep yourselves unspotted from the world."
It's like why the misbehaving child hates the well-behaved child. Because the well-behaved child shows up just how bad the misbehaving child is.
The father of lies loves to perpetuate the myths and ideologies of the past and mix them up with christian beliefs. His lies lead men to pursue power in the name of religious ideals that are earthly in nature and have nothing to do the Kingdom of God.
I like what the Apostle Paul says regarding theology and religious debate.
"I decided to know nothing but Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified."
1 Cor. 2:2
most people don't like to be controlled,
and people don't like to be told what to do
or how to think.
Belief in God, and belief in religion, to me, are two entirely different things.
Thank you for a very thought-provoking article, Donald. I especially like the passage from James 1.27:
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
Unfortunately, in my view, it is all too often these days that organized religion does not adhere to this principal.
But God loves to surprize us. I found one that actually feeds me. Spiritually.
I have grown by leaps and bounds since becoming a member.
You belong somewhere, believe it or not.
Only Christ was strong enough to go it alone.
And he went all the way so we wouldn't have to.
The bad churches and false doctrines get all the press.
Churches like the one I joined are champions of community and do so with little fanfare.
I was wrong in what I use to believe and I'm glad that God proved me wrong.
Because he forgave me at the same time and rewarded me with all the friends I have now. We praise him together and for eternity.
So if you haven't found the place for you, pray for one. Because those who seek will find!
Part 4 of the definition applies; and applies to Atheism. If you are devoted and pursue it, by definition it can become your religion.
Frankly, I don't know why others feel so threatened by public religionist/faith display and even some historical context and attribution to Christianity and Biblical influences to our government. The founding fathers and society of the 1700's North America as a whole were more "religious" and "fundamental" in their belief of Judeo-Christianity and the Bible than our society is now. I guess it is because our nation's religion now is "Political Correctness"?
But perhaps I may save that for another article some day.
Thank you again for all that wrote.

We'll probably have to fight to survive persecution by the people who believe that God is talking to them, and acting through them
We are going to find ourselves having to stop those people who believe in talking snakes, and invisible spirit beings from carrying out their beloved prophecy of Armaggden. Bless their hearts, they seem to be on a long term murder-suicide mission.
