What a Grand Canyon!
by Marilyn Mackenzie
Stone
Etched with God's hand
How can I know?
How can I not?
I've seen the beauty
Years
Of erosion
Still, God's doing
How can I know?
I've seen the beauty
Sun
Streaming through clouds
Also God's doing
How can I know?
I've seen the beauty
Plants
Peeking through rocks
God placed them there
How can I know?
I've seen the beauty
Men
Stand in awe
See God's doing
How do they know?
They've seen the beauty
A business trip in the year 2000 took me closer to the Grand Canyon than I've ever been, just hours away. There was no way I could go home without seeing this masterpiece. I knew it might be years before I would be within hours of the Grand Canyon again.
The weather was not in my favor. Cold, crisp air and gusting, frigid winds tried to dissuade me from making the trip. Snow tried to block my path. Still I persevered.
As I stood in one of the gift shops getting warm after being out in the bitter cold, I listened to two friends arguing about the origin of the Grand Canyon. One insisted that it was formed with God's hands. The other, that it was the erosion of water that formed the rock formations.
How I wanted to join that discussion! They were both right, I think. For, if water erosion was the cause of huge, wonderful Grand Canyon, we must remember who it was that gave us the water!
Perhaps I didn't get to spend the time I would have wanted drinking up the true beauty of the scene had the temperature had been warmer and the wind calmer. Perhaps what I experienced was just a taste of what I hope to experience sometime in the future. I want to be able to spend time drinking in the beauty and vastness of the Grand Canyon, without having to run for shelter from snow and cold!
Oh, but I was blessed, with the opportunity of seeing this natural wonder. Still pictures and videos images cannot compare with being in God's presence in that vast and grand etching of God's hand. What a grand canyon it truly is!
I'll be back. you Grand Canyon. I'll be back.
