Merlin and Coco's baby pics and a Secret. Guaranteed the cutest and surprising thing you'll see today.

Fans of my Siamese siblings, Merlin and Coco know they are getting on in years. I posted their 13th birthday bash in October and other pics on a regular basis. BUT for the first time, I'm posting their kitten pics. Everyone knows how crazy I am about my cats. They lead a pampered existence but it wasn't always that way.

I've never told anyone on Gather about Merlin and Coco's first year. It's not a happy story. They were born on October 2, 1994 to a Sealpoint mom, owned by a breeder. There were five in the litter. Merlin, ever the leader, popped out first. Coco who is the dumb blonde kitties, arrived last, about two hours later. They were joined by two brothers and a sister. The brothers went to one home. The other sister stayed with the mom and Merlin and Coco went to a relative of the breeder.

From the very beginning, Merlin and Coco bonded. Merlin had the habit of reaching out with his paw to her which he still does. (You'll see it some of these pics.) In those days they had other names and a rocky start. Their owner, a well meaning but unstable person for various reasons couldn't keep them and passed them on to another home. Her plan was to take them back when she could. This happened six times in their first year. They were shunted   back and forth to different homes for entire kittenhood!

When they were nine months old, they were back with the original owner and living in a windowless basement apartment. They weren't spayed or neutered and Coco was separated from Merlin, living in a cage most of the time. At that point, I was with the owner and urged her to get them spayed and neutered. She did and a couple months later on the eve of their first birthday, she moved to a new apartment.

One day, I got a frantic call from the owner saying her landlord would not allow pets. With no alternative, she brought Merlin and Coco to the Humane Society. She asked if I would adopt them. I readily agreed. They had been there for three days.  Siamese cats hate beeing in enclosed spaces. I'll never forget their skinny faces when they leapt out of their carrier into my living room. The first night they purred so loudly I thought I'd have to get earplugs. They've been purring that way ever since.

TO BE CONTINUED... with the kitty teen pics.

I'm grateful to have these early photos since I missed their kittenhood. They weren't the best quality but I did my best to photo-edit. http://media-files.gather.com/images/d643/d485/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

I suspect Merlin is the one at the top right. He's always lobbyed for the best spot.

My wife's cat, Jessie, has been the object of my irritation, then frustration and now admiration for 11 years. Once she got through the back of our bedroom closet on the 2nd floor and ended up in the eaves on the first floor (which was still 15 feet above the ground). I had to borrow the neighbor's extension ladder and cut a hole in the siding with the jig saw. Then I had to hide from her sight while everybody in the front yard called to her and then grab her when she stuck her head out. You know, when I got her down on the ground (with which she did NOT cooperate), she never even said thanks. I'd get rid of her if she didn't hold the mortgage. --Laz

What a beautiful story! I had no idea that Merlin and Coco were rescued kittens - they lived the life of luxury and pampering ever since. What totally adorable baby photos. Their biological mother was so loving. I love that photo of them all sleeping together. I can't wait to hear more. You should do an entire series of the Lives of Merlin and Coco.

When I was still married many years in the past we had a Siamese show up on our door step one day...poor thing was so cross eyed she would run diagonally toward where she started heading...we called her Chew Ming and enjoyed her visit with us until one day she disappeared, we figured she found her way back to her original owners...we seemed to always have cats just show up on our door step all the time, had a black part Siamese show up one time, called him Ra and he lived with us for a couple of years until he moved on...now I have a Momma gray with her three kittens who are feral living around me and eating regularly from my front porch...which my cat NoNo hisses at every time she sees them, just like a jealous woman...

Loved the photos...

HOW ADORABLE!!! How cruel to be shuttled back and forth and then kept in a CAGE!! OMG!!

Merlin and Coco are SO lucky to have you!!!

I feel so sad for all the kitties that are probably going through even worse times than they did in those first years...

Little sweethearts...

The instinct to mother fascinates me. It is truly a blessing for all species.

My grandmother had two Siamese, Inkydoo and Tiger. They were great cats.

They are such dolls! One of my clients has a Siamese cat. He is my buddy. He greets me everytime I walk in the door and expects me to give him my attention before I can start my chores. : )

It's cool that you know the story of their early lives. We've rescued so many animals and are constantly wondering what life experience has caused them to exhibit a particular behavior. They are two lucky cats, especially since they are so bonded and have been kept together.

Jean, I'm amazed how un-neurotic they are, given their difficult kittenhood.
