I wrote this for my daughter, Kayla, for her fourteenth birthday. Kayla's the reason I collect the gift cards from Gather, she loves to read! She's a beautiful girl, and I'm so fortunate to be her Mama!
Fourteen years, it has gone so fast! How I wish I could gather all those years and keep them in a special place, to go back and revisit whenever I choose. Not all of them were the best years, but this world has definitely been a more wonderful place throughout them...
A little over fourteen years ago, I found out I was pregnant... oh, how I cried! Not because I didn't want a baby, but because I was terrified, 'cause delivery with my first child was hell! lol But a couple months later, when I found out I was finally going to have my baby girl, it was all wonderful again.
Oh, this pregnancy wasn't easy. Instead of gaining weight, I lost eighteen pounds in three months. Anything I looked at, let alone smelled, make me throw up! My blood pressure rose, and I was ordered to bed rest... but I was excited, the entire time, waiting for the day! Oh, my baby girl kicked up a storm! We would laugh, watching her turn summersaults, or get the hiccups in my belly... but nothing beat her kicking my plate of spaghetti off my stomach! Something about that spaghetti... she always knew!!!
Well, as with all my children, my daughter was a little late coming into the world... two weeks, to be exact, guess she had to be just like her brothers who were also two weeks late... We were so excited when Dr. Hill finally told us she would induce labor on the 16th, if she hadn't made her grand entrance before that time. I was rather hoping she would come on my birthday, Sept. 29, especially when my doctor told me tornadic weather brought on babies, and we had a tornado warning that evening, but nope, even her Dad getting into a car wreck... and me just being a wreck... on the date she was due, was enough to stir her from her peaceful resting place!
October 15, I KNEW I needed to get a good nights sleep, as I had a big, exciting day ahead of me. My Mom and my Dad, who have been divorced since I was two, both stayed the night at my house, in preparation. We had SUCH a storm that night... they both ended up in the living room, where we were sleeping on the pull out couch! Hail was beating on the sliding glass doors, and the walls were shaking as though they were threatening to come in on us!
Exhausted, we all rose early on the morning of the 16th. My Mom and Dad kept Alex (then, almost two) entertained at the hospital while I was in labor. They were getting bored... so they all went out to eat!!!! Ugh... I remember thinking how wrong that was, especially as hungry as I was! lol
They got back right as the doctor was rushing me into the delivery room. Several minutes later, I held my baby girl for the first time. Looking down into those blue eyes, at a tiny version of myself, I had no idea just what a blessing was being bestowed on the world.
Kayla and I still look a lot alike, and act a lot alike, but she definitely has a personality all her own! Even as a baby, she was the one taking toys away from her brothers... she's still pretty ornery at times!!!
Kayla is such an intelligent, beautiful, talented young woman. She brings so much love to so many hearts... and each and every day, I thank God for letting me be a part of her life.
Today is Kayla's 14th birthday. Every day is special with her in it, but this is the day to tell her, so baby girl, this is dedicated to you!
I love you sooooo much!!!!
Mama
