This is my very first photo-essay. The photos are taken from huge Kings Park, mostly natural bushland, overlooking the city of Perth and Perth Water - comprised of the Swan River and Canning River as these flow some 12 miles further west to the Indian Ocean. It was here that black swans were first discovered by Europeans.
The first four photographs were taken a short way into the park.

The following ones are taken deeper into the park and thus the point of view is different.

A tourist tram, anyone?

The following are of the War Memorial overlooking Perth. Here the dawn service is held every ANZAAC Day, 25th April, to commemorate the war dead. The base of the cenotaph is then covered in a myriad wreaths and garlands.

I read that Australia was having a severe drought. These photos show lush greenery.
Our Prime Minister only visits Perth at election time...tomorrow we vote at the federal elections, and I hope he gets the boot.
Australia is gripped by drought...but the lawns of Kings Park are watered by bores. However, nearly all of the Park is natural bush...this remains unwatered.
I can't believe Perth. It seems to be a beautiful fusion of fine buildings in a splendid natural setting. The view from King's Park gives a panorama view of the city. Someone must have had vision to set aside this open green space for all to enjoy. Well done, Magi.
(thanks, Bob, I DID sleep late today, LOL!)
Kings Park is a favourite place with everyone...it really is a beautiful place, overlooking the city and huge expanses of rivers. It did take vision to initially reserve the large area of the park...prime real estate. The park is over 100 years old.
Kings Park is the must see spot if you ever come to Perth, my dear friend.
People can always click on the "This Article's Images" in the upper right and it will allow you to see the full screen version of each picture.
I'm still learning what and what not to do on Gather regarding the posting of images.
As to photo-essays, I feeling my way - there is so much new stuff to learn.
Love and Light to you.
Perth and West Oz are very different from India. Each has its own charm, I'm sure.
I'm still learning how to use the camera, the associated computer programme and how to post pics on Gather. It will take me some time to get familiar with all of these.
Kings Park is a favourite spot of both West Aussies and tourists alike. But it is most enchanting at night when Perth below the park is lit like a fairy city.
Now I know what the place where half of our South Africans stay looks like. It seems to be a great place.
I have to ask this...are their great coffee bars where a would-be writer can sit ply his trade? Is Perth a rush rush city where they would ask me to leave after my third cup of coffee? Just asking.
You have a natural talent so go for it Magi. I would prefer the pics a little larger. Would that be difficult or counter-productive in some way?
I'm still learning what I can do on Gather regarding pics...but I'll get there.
All the facts tucked away in your essay, just a great way to visit you. With the photos I feel like I might have made the trip! (I'd surely love to.)
Great city you have there.
I've got Firefox - I'm still on a huge learning curve regarding digital photography and what Gather will allow.
Great job, mate!
I'd appreciate the link to James Merill's 'Black Swan,' my friend.
BTW, Perth City also has a Queens Park...but not nearly as spectacular as Kings Park.
Perth is a beautiful city!
Perth itself is about ten miles or so from the Indian Ocean but the CBD sits on the banks of the Swan River.
