After the French revolution, in their new version of their new "senate", the aristocracy sat in the right wing of the room, the radical parties sat in the left wing of the room (and they were usually peasants). The center was mostly the well off merchant class types.
They just wouldn't sit with each other.
And that's how that started - or so they say.

Oh - and the clergy was over with the aristocracy - I forgot to include them. OOPS!!!
Personally I find that the terms of years past such as liberal and conservative have a different meaning today...and you are either right brain or left brain....that also determines your personality and thinking process....for example most artists are right brain......and they ten to walk to a different drummer....even the musicians....not the lefties...tend to lean toward math and similar subjects....thus your conservative...
and nothing has changed since.
