My step-mother called earlier and left a message for me to call her back at work, which is unusal. I tried several times, but kept getting bumped to the fax line. I finally tried one last time before I would call and leave a message at home.
The last time, it went through, though. Last week, she took my Grandma into the doctor for stomach pain. Her abdomin was distended a bit, as well, and there was a lot of tenderness. They scheduled her to go in on Wednesday for an ultrasound, and then called her back to get an EKG done on Friday. Either yesterday or Monday, she got sent to an OB that specializes in cancer.
She has a large mass on one of her overies, but blood tests show it isn't ovarian cancer. However, that doesn't mean it isn't cancer. She got recommended for surgery as soon as possible, which will be this Friday.
Rather than doing a quick outpaitent surgery, they are keeping her and said it would likely be Monday before she's released. Apparently, to remove the growth, they have to move around her bowels, as well, which could be the cause for the long stay. Or, it could be because of her age (she's in her late 70's), or even just to observe for internal bleeding, or because she lives alone.
I'm sure they will biopsy the growth to find out whether or not it's cancer. We've got our fingers crossed that it isn't, but you just never know. Her husband died about 18 months ago from lung cancer.
My step-mom is scared because of how fast it happened, and their reluctance to put the surgery off for very long. She was also uneasy about the appointments and how they were able to get in so quickly each time, making her think the doctors thought it was worse than they were saying right from the start.
Hopefully, things will be fine. But, there's always that doubt, you know?
