HATE CRIMES RISE !?!?!

I just opened my AOL like any other day and I came across a Head line that read:

"Hate Crimes Rise 8%"

That makes me absolutely sick! People are supposed to become more understanding not more ignorant. I mean I'm not completely naive and think all people are good people, but come on? Hate Crimes? If anything I'd expect regular crime rates to increase but absolutely not Hate Crimes.

Just in case some people were wondering Hate Crimes are Crimes fall under these categories:

Crimes against people with different:

- Sexual Orientation

- Religion

- Race

- Physical and Mental handicap

I was also shocked to find that more than half were Racial Hate crimes.

Last year there were over 7,300 reported hate crimes this year there was over 12,700

THOSE ARE ONLY THE REPORTED ONES!

That is shocking and appalling!

"Also in 2006, religious bias was blamed for 18.9 percent of the incidents; sexual orientation bias for 15.5 percent, and ethnic or national origin for 12.7 percent.

Of the 7,330 offenders identified by police, 58.6 percent were white, 20.6 percent were black, 12.9 percent were of unknown racial background and other races accounted for the remainder.

The greatest percentage of incidents, 31 percent, occurred near residences or homes. Another 18 percent occurred on highways or streets, 12.2 percent at colleges or schools, 6.1 percent in parking lots or garages, 3.9 percent at churches, synagogues or temples. The remainder occurred at other specific locations, multiple locations or unknown locations. "

Well, that's depressing. It makes me wonder what we have accomplished since the bigotry of the 60s. Seems like we are going backward instead of advancing.

Man. The most intelligant living thing on the face of the planet, yet the most hate filled and destructive. I don't see it getting any better. Only worse. It's part of what is going to cause our extinction. Hate. We are at the eve of our extinction. We just haven't gotten started good..

Hate crimes are on the rise in the United States, according to the FBI, and racial prejudice continues to dominate on the list of reported incidents. Reports of racial hate crimes have made national headlines in recent weeks. But some are beginning to wonder whether younger perpetrators of these crimes truly commit these acts solely based on malice, or hate, or out of ignorance. I believe it is both.

What ever happen to freedom of speech, this country is getting sicker and sicker, I guess next year calling someone a dirty rat will be a hate crime---when people are cramed together in small areas like a city they tent to kill one another off---the old 20 rats in a cage---within days only one was left---when only three were in the cage they got along just fine.

Sad but true. It seems the poverty levels in this country are skyrocketing ,fueling hate crimes. Sending jobs to China, robbing our citizens of their livelihoods, is a form of hate crime. And we thought the 50's or 60's were bad. At least most people had an opportunity to find a decent paying job.

Good point, Ron. Anymore it's become a crime to express yourself verbably. Granted calling someone a n***er or s**k is ignorant, inflammatory and worthy of an ass whoopin', but I don't think it's worthy of being punishable by law. When our right to speak freely is attacked then it lays the foundation for all of our constitutional rights to be attacked.....like they already are, like the right to bear arms. But that's a different issue....
Words are words. Sticks and stones....... Just turn away, ignore the ignorance. Responding to it just fuels the fire. If they lob a brick through your window or crack an axe handle across your legs, that's an entirely different story.
IMO...This politically correct BS has brought this on. People have become so touchy of what people say and get offended so damn easily that our law makers are now catering to them and making laws to appease them.

Renda? I really think the actual hate crimes are driven by hate. Hate being brought on by ignorance and fear.

One thing that has to be looked at is that some hate crimes are not properly labeled. Simply because the people involved are of different races, does not guarantee that was what motivated the crime.

All crime is bad, but maybe the hate crimes are lower than what's reported because the crimes may not be because of race. Differing races is sometimes a coincidence, but the crimes still have to be reported as hate crimes when they involve conflicting races.

Enough 10 ratings will get me a publishing deal. Help!
they are juggling numbers to keep us upset... yes... I know...there is plenty too much of hate in the world K, but 8% is almost assuredly a change n the way thing are reported.

also the numbers don't quite line up.... if they did we'd have to conclude that blacks were far more racist than whites given the percentage of the population vs. the quantity f reports.

TV and movies produce an onslaught of violence for audiences from the cradle to the grave. I think one big reason for the rise of hate crimes is a culmination of the violence found in video games, movies and TV. Comedy, too, these days is often more mean spirited than what we used to find funny. Where are comedians like Burns and Allen, Milton Berle, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball, and others who made us laugh at ourselves instead of mean jokes at the expense of others who were different from us. Even a TV advertisment has an ad where everyone is hitting people in the head - I think it is a V8 ad. That shows kids it is OK to hit other people who have different views. There has been a noticeable decline in tolerance in both politics and religion since this Republican administration came to power. The media has a powerful effect on how people in this country behave.

Any crime is horrible and they are all on the rise. Ignorance is a lack of knowledge and curable with education. Unfortunately stupidity seem to be uncurable. Anyone that commits cries for religous reasons has no concept of God!
I am not a fond believer or touter of statistics as they tend to be bias and lean to serve a certain perspective both good and bad. It is like the welfare dept saying child abuse is down but when you dont count the 5 states with the highest incedent of abuse sure the numbers look good.

Hmmmm...I wonder how much of the religious bias is based upon those from the Wahhabi sect? Reading the book on Defeating Terrorism (see my review if interested) has made me super-attentive that young children in America are being taught to hate anybody that is not a member of Wahhabism...and that they have an obligation to murder them! We need to be scared!

It seems to go on in all parts of the world. Look, at what the terrorists teach their children, to hate Israel, to hate Americans and anyone who doesnt think as they do. Its a sad thing, to feel that one race is superior to another, because we are all created equal in the eyes of God.

I never met a criminal who did a crime out of love. I think the terminology is ludicrous. We just had an old man's throat slit in our town. Did they do it because they liked him?

It is hard to believe. We were suppose to solve so many problems by eliminating racial bias but it seems the more we move into the brave new word, the more we fall back to ignorance.

That's not true. Many crimes are commited out of desperation.....like from hungry and unable to provide for your family.....

Lot's of crimes are committed by merely making a bad judgement call.....Like driving while drunk and ploughing over a pedestrian. That's definatley a crime, but I really doubt the driver hated the pedestrian.

Lot's and LOTS of crimes are committed because the person is under the influence of his addiction or trying to support his addiction.

None of these people hate the person/people they are committing the crimes against.
There are ton's of crimes that are committed, but not out of hate.

Don't take life to seriously. It's not like any of us get out alive, anyway.

It's man's destiny to destroy itself. No matter how much we protest, speak out or whatever. The hatred will continue to escalate until we all perish. Sad yes, but there's nothing we can do about it.

I am disappointed when I hear of incidents that indicate that we have not made as much progress as we'd like. At a Michigan University, four nooses were constructed from hoses and hubg up in a lab. It never occurred to me that it had a racist meaning, but that is the interpretation the college and the media publicized. I just can't wrap my head around this kind of ignorance and intolerance.

i wouldn't say things are "better" but different. people don't change. and lack of access to money and material goods keeps racism alive. those in power want those who can't regonize thier power to keep fighting amongst themselves...
