Cahokia Mounds

Cahokia Mounds is about 10 miles north east of St. Louis. Around 1,000 AD it was a city of as many as 20,000, larger than London or Paris, and the center of the Mississippian culture.

The Mississippians built three types of mounds. The flat topped mounds were ceremonial and/or contained the homes of high prestige people. The conical mounds were generally burial mounds for important people. Linear, or ridge toped mounds, may have marked boundaries.

Cool photos! So did you walk to the top of one of them? I can't remember if it's Monk's Mound, but who needs a fancy expensive step climber when you can go to the mounds and climb all those steps to the top?

My intent when I went there was to go to the top of Monk's Mound and shoot some pictures, but it was closed for repairs.

Closed for repairs? I'm just wondering what repairs they're doing up there. I can't remember if there's much of anything there. It's been a few years since I climbed up there though so my memory could be faulty.
