Over the River and Through the Woods

Lydia Maria Child (1802 - 1880) wrote a  poem in 1844 as she remembered her childhood visits to her grandmother's house.

 http://media-files.gather.com/images/d360/d469/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

The original Grandfather's House, Medford Mass., as immortalized in Lydia Child's poem. Now owned by Tuft's Univeristy, courtesy of Wikipedia.

The poem she wrote subsequently  became the famous song Over the River and Through the Woods.

Lydia Child was an editor living in Medford, Massachusetts, when she wrote the poem.  The Grandfather's house portrayed in the poem actually exists and is located at 114 South Street in Medford.

The house, seen in the photo, was built in the early 1800s as a small farmhouse and was enlarged in 1839 to include the two stories shown here. In 1976, Tufts University, also located in Medford, bought and restored this historic house. It is a classic example of Greek Revival architecture, common in that era.

Several versions of Child's original poem exist. The one below is my favorite. Although this version mentions "Grandfather's house (and this was the original 'grandparent' mentioned in the poem) some versions do say "Grandmother's house."

The river mentioned in the poem is Medford's Mystic River, also memorialized by a movie of the same name a few years ago.

Over the river and thru the wood,
To grandfather's house we go;
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh,
Thru the white and drifted snow, oh!

Over the river and thru the wood,
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes,
And bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.

Over the river and thru the wood,
To have a first-rate play;
Oh, hear the bell ring,
"Ting-a-ling-ling!"
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day-ay!

Over the river and thru the wood,
Trot fast my dapple gray!
Spring over the ground,
Like a hunting hound!
For this is Thanksgiving Day.

Hi Kathryn...We used to sing this song in elementary school when I was a kid. I actually had a grandmother who hosted a fabulous Thanksgiving meal for the whole family every year. Even though this says grandfather I also thought of grandma. Thank you for all the great info!

Elaine - I love this song, too. The school had a big sing a long every year - and my kids always sang it. I had never seen the house until a few months ago - and did not know it was in Medford until a few years ago.

I remember singing this in grade school, too.
paul grubb Aug 22, 2009, 4:10pm EDT
We always sang that song when we went to our grandmothers for Thaksgiving, But as I remember it...the house on South street is where Lydia Maria Child lived, and her Grandparents lived on what is now Woburn St. in West Medford, Hence going over the river and through the West Medford woods! The house is on the left hand side as you turn on to Woburn St from High St rt 60. It is the sixth house on the left not including the big yellow house on the corner. Lydia also went to the Dame school which is located up the street from south street in the hillside area and the same side of the mystic river. If she went to school at the Dame, she would have lived on that same side of the river as her gradparents so, Why would she have to cross the river to get to her grandparents house? Someone has made a mistake in calling that house her grandparents house. If you, or anyone has any other info on this I would love to hear it! Sincerely... Paul

Funny, we have been singing this song every day this week at circle time. I have three different books written in the last five years featuring this song...all very different. Today we did a Venn diagram comparing the three.

Bob, - a venn diagram - that is very interesting indeed. Music and math, history and families, all at the same time. I was surprised to read that the original was about Grandfather's house, though Lydia remembered her Grandmother's house as an inspiration to the poem.

I don't know if a painting of the original small farmhouse exists, Bob.

My parents splurged on Childcraft books for us. I think, thanks partly to my oldest sister Sharon, we memorized practically all the fables, songs, poems and short stories. This was among them! Great memories.
Thanks, Kathryn, for the great value-add to Gather!

Judging by all the window units, the house didn't have any cavities that could be used for air conditioning ducts.

Grandpa was loaded, back in the day, it seems. That's one big house.

I learned additional verses to this song

Over the river and through the woods
and straight to the barnyard gate
We seem to go extremely slow,
it is so hard to wait;
Over teh river and through the wood,
Now grandmother's cap I spy,
Hurrah for the fun, the puddings done,
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie.

For the past several years as Cindy and I (Cindy is my furry, 4-legged roommate) take our morning walk on Thanksgiving morning, we slip a home made post-card Thanksgiving greeting into the newspaper of our neighbors. With only a few days to go, I haven't found "just the right words" for this year's greeting. I think I just did. Thanks for the lyrics, Kathryn (and Mary Louise). Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, everyone!

I am singing as I type , Over the river and through the woods, boy do I remember that one, we all knew it I remember singing it in grade school and my kids and my grand kids too, what a wonderful poem that was, and everytime I go out in the car when it has the first snow, I sing that to myself, such wonderful words, never thought I would be the grandmother people come to see, but that's me, have some people coming in on Thursday, not many Wayne, my daughter's widower, his mother, my son Mark, Billy and me, and the kitty too. I will cook, not a whole lot but enough so everyone takes some home, turkey is a one day meal for me, then I have had it for the next year, makes me sleepy. I love your article for Thanksgiving Kathryn, hope you have a lovely , peaceful one,

Robert - just a simple man - B. Nov 24, 2008, 7:56am EST
Thanks K-E-O from way down deep in my heart. I enjoyed this. My great-aunt Tessie called Medford home. The first time I remember going to Aunt Tessie's (circa '67 or '68) she was already 101 years old. Her home was on the river and I believe there were railroad tracks nearby AND a huge bowl of hard candy on the dining room table. I can't recall when Aunt Tessie passed on but I remember it was after I first heard "A Horse With No Name". Strange how we remember some things.

Thank you K-E-O. Love you.

Robert, that would be the Mystic River, I know it well, and the tracks. I drive into Medford via Route 60 - Paul Revere's Way twice a week. A lovely place to call home, and an even lovelier place to have been a home when your grandmother was 101. That would be about '71 or so...my memory of the song...or shortly after 69...

Robert, yes, Norman Rockwell. There is a Rockwell museum in Springfield, Mass. but I have never been. Much of Massachusetts and New England still looks like that. My town, for example, a 50s look. Must be also one of the two reasons the LDS settled here, as well as I. The other reason being proximity to Harvard and MIT (one town away) and the excellent school system.

Let me know if you come up this way. Our summers are not nearly so hot or humid.

History can be fun to learn; I had only heard the first stanza prior to this post. --Joe

Kathryn, this is amazing. I did not know that Lydia Marie Child was the originator of this poem. Just last month we interviewed Carolyn Karcher, a scholar who has written a cultural biography of Child, an abolitionist and women's rights activist. Karcher, a professor emerita at Temple University in Philadelphia, will soon issue a new edition of Albion Tourgeé's best-selling novel, Bricks Without Straw. Tourgeé was a civil rights activist during reconstruction. You have taken me on a journey "over the river and through the woods" with your post. Incredible how all of these stories are connected.

Oh, I will have to look into Karcher....I had no idea it was in Massachusetts until a few years ago when a flyer came home with the Thanksgiving Concert, stating that this originated in Medford and that the original house still exists. So, two years ago, I researched it.

Wow, I love activists, will look into Tourgee, too.

Here's a great book about Tourgeé -- Color-Blind Justice: Albion Tourgée and the Quest for Racial Equality from the Civil War to Plessy v. Ferguson by Mark Elliott. The book, recently released in paperback, earned a national award from the Organization of American Historians. There is an incredible Tourgeé collection at the Chautauqua County Historical Society in Westfield, NY. Tourgeé wrote the nation's first anti-lynching law.

Sorry for the off-topic comment -- I tend to get carried away by history.

Glad to know grandfather's house has been preserved!

I remember this song well. I used to feel slighted because all my friends went to Grandmas. I didn't get to because my parents lived ingrandmas house and the rest of the family came to us. To my little kid's way of thinking that was just all wrong. I got over it as I grew older and appreciated the fact that I didn't have to go out in the cold.

Yes this is one song that was written for Thanksgiving and I remember it well and it burns me that even this one in new books for kids attributes it to Christmas now. It was not a Christmas song and I am glad to see others here know that.

Jen: Great comment, and yes it is sad how people can change something by not doing even the most basic of research.

I always knew this as a song, rather than a poem. Thank you for providing some of the history connected to it.

I loved this song/Poem! We lived in Boone NC and would drive to Grandma's House for Thanksgiving and would sing it... Albiet we only knew the first two verses and not correctly it seems but we had the thought correct it made it exciting on the long 2 hour drive. Great memories and great story to bring them back!
