A recent government report suggests that explosive substances can still be smuggled past screeners and onto the airlines. Midmorning examines the challenge of balancing safety and efficiency in airline travel.Â

What is the perfect balance? I'd wagerÂ in theory we all want a 100% safety record on the flight we're about to board, but the practice involves standing in long lines and I've yet to meet anyone happy to do that. How can airport security become more efficient and more effective?

And the people that are not doing a good job can't be fired because they belong to a government union.

A 100% security record is a good goal, M M, it is just that I'm left wondering what success rate we'll settle for if it means expedited access to travel.

Gary, if a plane is bombed... it is the union's fault for protecting bad employees? I'm playing devil's advocate because I'm surprised that you didn't have suggestions on a number of ways to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
