Today among my daily avalanche of emails I got an ad from Lifescript that said:
Rebate Processor Position - Easy Work - Great Pay
Your Help Is Needed
$143.50 and up... per day
okay..well, I could use 143.50 per day, and I like easy work.. how hard could rebate processing be.. so I clicked to check it out. Of course, I knew it was some kind of crap and there would be a catch, but I was still curious to see just what they were offering. What I found was a loooong page, explaining how I could make tons and tons of money right here in my jammies on my computer, just by filling out simple forms and processing rebates. They update your site 24/7 with rebates for you to process, you just fill out the forms. Of course, there were tons of glowing testimonials about how much money these people are making and how happy they were for the "opportunitY".. and I could get this once in a lifetime opportunity to be "certified" as a rebate processor and start earning too, for the paltry sum of just 197.00!! UMMMM.. hmmmmmm... this needed a little more looking into. So, I fired up Google and went searching for info, and what I found out is that this wonderful "job" they wanted me to pay 197.00 for the privilege of joining is yet another big ol' steaming pile of poo.
Basically, you have to join affiliate programs through Clickbank, set up your own PPC campaigns or whatever type of ads you choose to use, and you have to place ads with your special ID attached offering rebates to people who buy a product and then when they buy something from the ads you have to place, you process the rebate to your customers through Paypal and get paid for the sale. Now, I suppose it's not a bad deal.. if you make the sales. If you're a sales person or place great ads and can build up a way to actually sell the products, then it could be a pretty good way to make some cash. The problem is, they make it sound in the ads like you'll be working for companies helping them process rebates, and mentions nothing about having to place ads or sell anything. The thing is, you can do this on your own, I would imagine, without paying these people your hard-earned cash for the privilege of their "service". I'm not sure..maybe you can't. I'm not sure what the deal is with the rebates, who issues them to the customers, where the offers for the rebates come from, etc.. I'll have to look into that, but bottom line is, don't get sucked in to this scam and waste your money.
I did find another site in my search that offers to set you up with their program for just 39.00.. quite a difference in price, but they don't mention anything about certifying you do to anything, but the description of their "job' is the same as the other one, and I'm sure it's the exact same thing.. along with this one, you get access to all the other "opportunities" on their network ..this is the list I copied and pasted from their ad..

These are LEGITIMATe companies that hire at home workers to answer phones for call centers.. like infomercial orders and stuff like that. Any "Job" that asks you to pay a fee to be hired or to access some job bank is a scam.. except for some freelance job places, like elance or ifreelance, not sure if they charge to join or not..but I think Elance does charge, but they have legitimate freelance jobs...

If you want a legitimate work at home job, try the sites I listed above. They are actual jobs, but you do have to qualify and go through training to be hired.
If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
It's a shame because people that really could use the extra money are prime targets for these theives. You can find legitimate jobs, but they require a lot of searching. If I'm in doubt about a program, I just go to the search engine, plug in the name of the program and see what comes up. That has saved me numerous times from parting with my money.
You have other great info in your other comments too.
