which of his interests or hobbies do you want to encourage? ... when my neice showed an aptitude for artistic expression, we encouraged that by getting her the art supplies to let her try different types of art ..... she liked being creative and used up the supplies in very little time .... asking and hinting for more for birthdays, christmas, etc .... it was a pleasure for us to watch her grow as an artist and find such satisfaction in her passion ..... the cost of the supplies was well worth it ....
what does he like? A cool t-shirt with picture of someone or with a phrase he says or you could go electronics most little boys are into it. Lego if he hasn't outgrown it. A video or maybe a computer game ... just a few ideas!
I sit with my grandchildren and we look at toys r us and other sites together. They point out what they like the best. I try to listen and later ask, was it the xyz you wanted? If they remember they really wanted it. They love to do this and I make no promise to get them anything. It gives me an idea and it something we can do together. The list for Santa is good but I remember having to jot it all down myself. At least looking at the different websites I get an idea of the prices and what is out there.
Last year I decided to make my life easier and I bought each child one big thing. That way it lasts. Like a three floor doll house for Barbie dolls. It is less likely to get broken like the plastic stuff.
After having 4 children myself one thing I learned to do was evaluate the toy myself. Can I stand to hear this thing 24 hours a day?
I like things that keep em busy but not with small parts. If you do buy legos, please please get a plastic container for them to go in. Those corners are sharp on the feet in the dark. ouch.
It's best to talk, kids usually know what they want best.
A fish tank :) (I am the pet associate at work so I am trying my selling techniques). I think a game boy DS, Wii, I dont know I am a so glad I have younger boys because I am no good with boys stuff.
Well, my son is almost 11, and he has really been into the video game scene for the past few years. As long as the kids are not allowed to sit in front off the TV playing them all the time, I am all for the video games. There are specific games that are rated for his age group, and the games show the ratings just like movies do. Action figures are always a good idea. If you know what characters he likes, the action figures are great. My son is in his Star Wars phase right now, and I am able to get those action figures for him. Legos are an all-time favorite as well as Hot Wheels! Hot Wheels are a constant around my house along with the little motorcycle toys. Of course, each child is different, so it is really dependent upon what he is actually into. But those are some things that I have gone through in the past few years. Hope it helps! an "evergreen" gift is movie tickets and a concession gift card done up in a popcorn container. Over the winter, the movies are a great form of entertainement.
My grandchildren, ages 9 and down, have a Nintendo DS with 'Brain Age' and 'Big Brain Academy'. It's so much fun, my husband and I gave each other one for Christmas last year and continue to add brain games to our collection. In minutes per day you can increase your ability to think. Another idea is Nintendo Wii. It's a video game that is interactive. He won't just be a couch potato and you will love it too. We have 'Wii Sports', 'Carnival games', 'Big Brain Academy', and several others. I love it.
Boys have always been hard for me to buy for. I have two daughters but also have 9 nephews and still have a hard time figuring it out. All of them are different: some are athletic, some are computer geeks :), some love to read, some are a combination of all that and more, etc.
I do happen to have two 8 year old nephews one of which wants a Nintendo DS game for Christmas and the other is getting some Goosebumps books. Not sure what else he will be getting though.

I called him today, and he said, "Not now Mimi I'm busy." So I said, "Okay, these socks are pretty." Then, he poured out his little greedy heart. Books, bike, skates.. . Then, he said, "I'll get on Walmart. com and try to help you some more. Greed is such a great tool.

Boys that age like those hand held video games...
