Everybody's probably heard of NaNoWriMo, which has been underway for 12 days now. For those unfamiliar with NaNoWriMo, it stands for National Novel Writing Month, a writing event which occurs every November where writers sign up to finish a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. It is an exercise turning off the internal editor and focusing on writing in order to churn out a large amount of words in a short period of time. Last year over 79,000 writers participated in NaNoWriMo and nearly 13,000 completed the one month challenge of 50,000 words.
Many people participate in NaNoWriMo because they have had a story stuck in their head (or in their notes) for months, perhaps even years and decide to use NaNoWriMo as their motivation to finally get it on paper. For them, completing their novel during NaNoWriMo serves as a twofold victory.
Perhaps similarly you would like to try your hand at writing humor but for some reason or another haven't taken the plunge. Maybe it's a funny personal story or a parody of a popular song, or perhaps it's just a funny idea for a piece of fiction that's been bouncing around in your head for sometime, yet you haven't put it to paper. Excuses for not taking the plunge are legion: no one gets my sense of humor, I don't have a sense of humor, I'm not as funny as other people, this story is only funny to me, etc, etc, etc.

However, your arguments are so compelling, I am taking pen in hand and I'm going to write something funny right now because I can post that on this site next week and it will be
OK if people laugh at me.
Thank you for facilitating this Personal Growth Experience and you're right — the prize is lame.

We'll need the humor to share on Thanksgiving day to try to stay awake after all the turkey...

If the prize is a gold lamé badge, I'll take two. Halfway to next summer's bikini....
