In 2002 I discovered a wonderful resource on the internet that was called Freecycle. I do not remember how I first heard about it to be honest but once I discovered it I was so excited because it was legitimate dumpster diving with the person knowing that you were coming instead of just leaving something outside for the trash and having people take it. I have been a "dumpster diver" for many years. One man's trash is another man's treasure as the saying goes and I have never actually been in a dumpster, just to clear that up. But if I drive by someone's trash outside their house and see something salvagable I will stop and check out the quality.
Freecycle has the same principle except that someone is going to throw out something and post it on a local email board saying "OFFER: king size waterbed, good condition." or whatever the item is. If you are the first responder in most cases it is yours but in some cases the giver will take any email they get if they think the person sounds the best for the item. That is usually the case in high ticket items like computers or clothing. They want someone with the best sob stories about why they need it.
Here is a compiled list of some of the things that I have received via freecycle and curb hunting.

I can't believe what people throw out here. I have never found anything on Freecycle, but I check often:)
It really bothers me that some who take things on FreeCycle actually sell what you were trying to give away, so I make sure not to give away anything sentimental.
