Did you know that a Where's Waldo book was banned? Yep.

Mandi - It turns my stomach when I read about banned books. Banning books is no different than burning them, like Hitler did. If people are afraid of the content in a book, then don't read it. That's a no-brainer. I don't appreciate someone trying to dictate what I can and cannot read.

Wow, some of those titles really surprised. While others do not. I think instead of banning books. They need to use those books as a teaching tool of what not to do. and how not to act.

ps. Waldo was banned because one of the beach goers in a beach scene does not a have atop on...I guess boobs are taboo....oh my God!

That's really funny. I'm always amazed at how overly sensitive people can be about books. Maybe the people who think they're inappropriate should try reading something every once in a while. That reminds me, I really need to get back to reading Salman Rushdie

It drives me nuts when they ban books...someone tried to ban all witch books..and anything dealing with mysticism...that knocked out the whole 10th grade curriculm..

I KNOW WHY WALDO WAS BANNED!!!! They said a second grader found a picture of a naked woman somewhere in a Waldo book and you can clearly see every part of her!!!!! I used to love the Waldo book when i was younger but when i hear about this, i freaked!!!

This REALLY pisses me off:
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. Anne Frank. Modern Library. Challenged in Wise County, Va. (1982) due to "sexually offensive" passages. Four members of the Alabama State Textbook Committee (1983) called for the rejection of this book because it is a "real downer."

It is a diary written during a bad historical time but still offers a voice for that time period. Between this and the fact that Tom Sawyer was banned - I don't know which is more retarded! I know that racial remarks are scary and wrong and that things in books are not always happy-go-lucky, but the historical context can be just as educational as what is written within the pages of the book. At least, that's how I was taught in school. It's just as important to learn about WHY and WHEN the books were written as it is to understand what is written in them. Geez!
