After careful neglect of my attempts at astrophotography for a while, I decided to visit the dome for a few snaps this past week. We'll start with a shot of the latest phenomenon Comet 17P/Holmes...

We are currently seeing this exploding comet head-on...the tail is behind it so we can't see one, for now. This comet brightened a million-fold from mag 17 to mag 3 in a matter of a couple of days (the reason is as yet a hot topic of speculation) and we should be able to see it in the northern sky (in USA) for many weeks to come.

Next is a shot of a pretty good sized solar prominence.
I looked at these two just to see if they're still there...
M1 - Crab Nebula M51 - Whirlpool Galaxy

And that's about it for this week. I'll leave you with some shots I've taken from the past. Most of these shots were taken from the highly light-polluted suburban backyard GladysLeo observatory in Tulsa, OK. The following picture of the Orion Nebula was taken about 20 miles outside the city limits from a much darker location:

This is the Orion Nebula - M42 and M43 and the Running Man Nebula (upper left)
