ni hao!
our daughter, lillie (5) LOVES to cook. she's at home in the kitchen, whipping up hummous, cheese dip, desserts, bread, pizza...you name it, she loves to do it! we've been starting to learn mandarin and found the best kids cooking chinese video, by earlystartmandarin.com - it was fun to watch and learn. however, knowing us, we weren't content to just watch it... we made the meal for dinner today - and it is lillie's new signature meal. it's very easy, and SO tasty. here are our adapted recipes...enjoy!
egg flower soup
heat up 6 cups homemade chicken broth, and then add 3-4 thinly sliced green onions.
add a few huge handfuls of organic spinach, and add some mushrooms if you'd like (i loathe fungus). add 1 t soy sauce and a little pepper. simmer for abt 3 minutes. now, here is the fun part - put 2 eggs in a bowl, and whisk them. now, slowly add them in a circle, to the hot soup pan. use a steady stream while you are slowly pouring the eggs in. after abt 45 seconds, stir it with a chopstick to break it up a bit. the eggs make the most lovely ribbons, or flowers. garnish in each bowl with a few sliced green onions and a few drops of sesame oil.

yummy chicken stir fry
mix up:
¼ cup homemade chicken stock
2 t cornstarch
add in:
3 T soy sauce
1 T korean bulgogi sauce, or hoisin sauce (whatever you have in the fridge)
2 t packed light brown sugar
set sauce aside.
heat in a pan on high:
2 T vegetable oil
add in and stir for 15 seconds:
3-4 sliced green onions, plus more for garnish
3-4 cloves garlic, minced
thumb-size knob of ginger, minced
add in and cook for 3-4 minutes:
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into pieces
add in and cook for 2-3 min:
one large bag of asian stir fry vegetables (or fresh veggies to your choice - make sure to add water chestnuts!)
then add the sauce and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes. sprinkle with a little bit of dark sesame oil, and serve with freshly cooked rice!

the meal was so very delicious, very fresh tasting, and extremely easy. lillie was so proud of herself!

And she wears a feather boa while cooking! Talk about a hot little momma.
Very cool post. Had me grinning all over myself.
She is learning Mandarin? I am impressed....!
My grandson (will be 8 January 3rd) knows enough to be able to chat with his dad.
sonia - she's dabbling in a bunch of languages - seeing which ones she likes best and then going more in depth. she can count and say a few words in 5 or 6 languages! now, to dig in deeper...
thank you!
Kevin is surprised about the feather boa??? Doesn't he wear his when he's cooking? Sheesh... where's the fun in that?
Lillie, darling, just go on being the princess that you are.
Love how you presented the stir fry and rice. Yummy!
Jessie, whatcha got there? The future Rachel Ray? ;))
Great, mom!
My question: If Lillie is only 5, how does she reach eye-level with the stove top, much less tower over it as indicated by her photo? I'm guessing she hops on some kind of little stool. I'm just concerned that her clothing can easily catch fire.
thank you!
What a great way to learn about the world around you and have fun too!
I enjoyed the pictures that gave life to the recipes. I learned a bit this morning, never knew to wait 45 seconds before swirling the egg streamers. I've been swirling too soon all these years. I have learned patience from your princess.
Thanks!
Blessings to you all,
Mary Mc
Smiling atcha.
Lillie can cook?
Though she'd much rather
read a book,
or swim in the sea
(with the fishies) I'm told.
But if you get a whiff
of her cheese dip spread
or taste her crackling bread
you'll have to confess
she's a wonderful chef
and get in line to be fed.
