You Are Wondering If You Should Open This

Often, we are not introspective enough. Sometimes we neglect to take a moment to actually look at ourselves. I have a question for you. Are you happy? I'm not just meaning are you emotionally happy right this second. Are you happy with where you are in life and what you're doing?

Let's address a few things:

Yourself
Are you happy with who you are?
Are you concerned with your looks or how you are perceived by others?
Do you feel that you're headed in the direction that you want to go in life?
Do you feel like you're overwhelmed?
Do you feel like you're stuck and not going anywhere?
Do you want to make any changes, and if so, do you know what they are?
Do you have something that you need to get over?
Do you have a task that you need to get done but haven't put forth an adequate effort to do so?
Do you know what's stopping you and should it be stopping you?
Do you have ambitions that you haven't accomplished yet?
Are you financially where you want to be?
Do you ask enough questions?
Do you challenge other people to be better?
Are you responsible and reliable?
Are you a person that others respect?
Do you make other people better?
Do you regularly show your friends and family how important they are to you?
Do you constantly strive to better yourself?

Your Friends
Do you like your friends?
Do they make you better?
Do they push you to succeed?
Do they actually care about you or only care about themselves?
Are they responsible and actually follow through with what they say?
Are they happy with their lives?
Are they having any hardships and need your support?
Do you need to let some friends go who are not making you better?
Are there other changes you'd like to make?

Education
Do you constantly strive to learn more?
Have you become apathetic to learning about life outside your own?
Are you consistently furthering your education?
Are there subjects you'd like to know more about?
Have you made education a priority in your life no matter your age?
Are there changes you'd like to make?

Family
Do you spend enough time with your family?
Do you consistently show your family how much they mean to you?
Do you work on your relationships with your family especially when you have problems between you?
Do you support your family members and the ambitions that they have?
Have you made it a point to have quality time with them?
Are there any changes that you'd like to see with your relationship with your family members?

Work
Are you doing the kind of job that you'd like to?
Are you happy with your job?
Are you making as much as you should?
Do you deserve a raise?
Are you doing as much at work as you should be?
Are there improvements you can make?
Is there any other job that you'd like to be doing?
Are there other changes you should make?

Money
Are you financially stable?
Are you out of debt or doing all that you can to get out from it as fast as possible?
Are you saving for your future?
Are there activities/expenditures that you should cut down on to help you save money?
Are you living within your means?
Are there things you can do to save more?
Are you paying too much for certain things and are there cheaper alternatives?

I hope in reading these questions, you actually stop to think about where you are in life and what changes you'd like to make. If there are changes that need to be made, talk to your friends and family about them to get their input and support. You're stronger in being able to turn to your loved ones. They'll help you and give you perceptions and ideas that you might not have come up with on your own.

If something needs to change, make the change.

You only have one life to live so use it wisely.

You deserve to be happy.

I'm so happy I don't have the time to focus on myself for any length of time.

Happiness is achieved by leaving the world a much better place than it was when you found it.
I'll try for that. To me it's like getting a face lift - why bother! I'm not about to spend thousands of dollar so that others will 'enjoy' looking at me. It's fine from this side-:)

I am definitely not happy with where I am in life right now and know where I want to be, but it has taken me awhile to figure out what I need to do to accomplish that. So, now that I know what I must do I am working my way to achieving my goals.

Jean, just the teensiest bit odd, F. Nov 6, 2007, 12:19pm EST
Well, Dan, I guess we ALL have areas where we'd like to improve and those areas where we think we do pretty well... It's always possible, though, that the areas we think are doing badly in really aren't so bad and the areas we think we've got "in the bag" are just an illusion... I'm sure I don't know... But, then, by whose perspective are they "bad" or "good"? Who's to say? Not me anyway... I try to "take it as it comes" -- one day at a time -- and that's the best I got. :o)

Shows a lot of thought Dan. . . instead of giving "Yes, No, No, Yes" to these great questions, let me offer this. . . at 58 years young, I have had some regrets but they are all minor in comparison to the joys that I've been blessed with. Here's a similar thought - Do you know that the Great Secret to Life is???

More later. . .

Wonderful check list. I'm happy to say I think I can answer the questions with good answers and find my life quite happy right now. I think it takes many years to figure out what makes you happy, luckily I've found out what makes mine work for me. At 44 I'm the happiest I've ever been and can honestly say I enjoy life. Oddly enough, I also am in the most pain I've ever been in after my bout with cancer, yet I can see past it and realize what still makes me happy. I'm a very lucky woman.

A lot to think about, for sure, and much of it worth reflection. The hardest thing for me to do (and perhaps others) is to strive consistently not to fall back into perceptions from childhood or high school but to CONSCIOUSLY realize that I can continue to change, learn, grow and become wiser.

It is the "automatic thinking" or preconceptions that can get in our way. For instance, I often picture myself as being 12 years old with braces and goofy glasses. I haven't been that person for a long time. Funny how old "pictures" of ourselves still shape our self-image.

I think I will print this out and use it to take stock / make resolutions come New Year's Day. I think I am happier and more comfortable with myself and where I am in my life than I have ever been. I am also happily married as of almost 4 years ago. I wonder what I would be feeling if I were still alone or hopping in and out of relationships? I will have to think on that.

So many questions...a little on the overwhelmed side at the moment. So many things going on in my life right now. Little stressful at work covering for a co-worker. I'm working at getting my happiness and smiles back and I am making headway. No one can make you happy if you are not happy with yourself. Only you can change you can't change another person.

Randee, I like what you had to say young man! As always
I read the comments which helps me to know my friends
here on Gather. Y'all are my extended family I love y'all so
much. My life was full before Gather, my family, Church and
my Art class. It seems I was missing out on quite alot not
being on Gather. I thank my daughter Sarina for hooking me
up, she is a Gather Gal and her husband Gerrit just joined!
Now I am writing my series on Bluebonnets Of Texas which
I probably wouldn't have done if not for being here on Gather
and I know y'all are liking/loving this series. I wish to thank
y'all for such gracious comments that have been made. It is
a great incentive for me to keep writing. God Bless Y'all. And
thank you for this timely aricle Dr. Dan!! *smiles*

Dan, life gives back what we give to it. Great questions for all to ponder.

Dan I always open mail from you!
When I turned 42 I finally realized that I was comfortable with me, I liked me. If you want to change your life, change your mind. It works with everything, at least for me it does.

Is being happy what life's all about? I personally think happiness is overrated. The term is too general. It contains too many shades. I prefer contented and joyful.

Gah happiness. Some days I feel like I have everything going for me, but then a lot of the time I feel like nothing's going right. I try to make whatever changes that are easy and accessible to do, but sometimes even that is hard.

I am not involved enough in the community. I tend to hole up and keep a close circle of friends and family.

Well, thanks... You kinda provided me with a check list on what I need to do create my own peace. I need to correct a few things in the "Yourself" and "Money" department. I feel great about my friends and family, and think that's wonderful place to be. I will keep these questions in mind.

Yes, I feel overwhelmed at times. When I can slow down enough to think and listen to what is going on around me I am in a much better place. If I can get my mind in tune with my body I can deal with work, family, health issues, etc. in a positive way. So, I guess my answer is .... it depends on how successful I am at being in synch with my emotions and physical being at any given time.

I'm happier than I've ever been, but... there is always a but, I have a long way to go to say I am really happy and everything is good. There is always room for improvement. I'm always learning. Is there ever enough money. I have all I need, but not all I want. I've always been a helicopter mom and its hard to back off and let my 20 something kids live their own lives so I seldom see them, My parents live 1000 miles away. I'm disabled, don't work outside the home. Of course I'm concerned with the way I look . Since my stroke I have gone from a size 9 to a size 18 or so, I am crippled, I can't dress the way I use to. I can't wear my hair the way I use to. I have had 2 husbands leave me because I got fat. Yes, I'm filled with stress. What takes a normal person to do in say 15 minutes takes me an hour if I can do it at all. ppl tend to take advantage of disabled ppl. I can't even change a damn light bulb.
