Today's Des Moines Register:
To date, the 2008 presidential campaign has been little more than a sound-bite competition, with candidates delivering safe, scripted stances that do little to bring about any actual change. On the issue of the gradual erosion of civil liberties by the Bush administration, only rhetoric has been offered to satisfy the public's ever-growing frustration - until now.
Sen. Chris Dodd has spoken out passionately during his campaign for president on the need to restore our Constitution and habeas corpus. Recently he had the political will and the integrity to stand up when no one else would.
Placing a procedural hold on the FISA legislation that would grant amnesty to those phone companies that took part in the Bush administration's illegal wiretaps on American citizens, and threatening a filibuster, Dodd stood up for the Constitution.
Campaign rallies are fun. Stump speeches are entertaining. Rallying against Washington is a tried and true message that inspires, but at the end of the day, rallies and speeches are toothless and raise false hopes. Dodd is doing more than talking - he's acting, and it's about time someone did.
And it's about time people started showing the same courage Dodd has and begin supporting his candidacy, because to stand with Dodd is to stand up for the rule of law and stand up to this administration.
