Wow. Can there be a review of this film that doesn't include the word "intense" and "disturbing"?
Another obvious question: What was Jodie Foster's mother thinking?
De Niro is brooding, dark and determined as the titular taxi driver who finally becomes fed up with the filth, degradation, drugs and mess he sees as he navigates the New York City streets at night. His motives are frighteningly pure, if his execution is horrific.
Jodie Foster is very (too) believable as a 12-year-old prostitute, trapped in a life she longs to escape. "I only got somewhere to go when I'm high."
The climax of De Niro's descent into madness is triumphant and appalling.
