Iowa lost a major employer Maytag.
The closing of the Maytag plant has since become a political agenda for the presidential candidates trying to sway Iowa voters.
Mitt Romney leads the Iowa Republican polls by a very comfortable lead over Guilliani.
Romney has unveiled part of his plan to put people, like the former Maytag employees, back to work. His plan as I understand it so far is to offer training through the Iowa Workforce Development Center.
What? A Republican supporting an entitlement program!
Is Romney talking out of both sides of his mouth or is he one of the "new" Republicans that are realizing there is more to this country than big business?

That is why I ask myself whether these candidates plan on putting their money where there mouth is or are they just talking out of both side of it.
So what's new, Lori?
Shall we continue to whine, then vote for them anyway? Or perhaps we should send the message that what we really want and need is someone capable of 1) listening to all, and 2) making decisions for all and not just the ones who agree.
The choice is ours.
Don they all lie. At least it was refreshing to hear a repub changing his tune and thinking about the people for a change.
Bill isn't running this time. Plus we've already had a Hill-Bill co-presidency.
Lori--I have no clue whom I will vote for.....out of the top 3 maybe Thompson,...he seems to have the most backbone,...and in these days we need someone who's not afraid of the media.
Lori--At times it's all so overwhelming,...maybe they should give us voters a break from all the yahoos.
Christene the problem I have with Thompson is he doesnt seem to commit to issues. He has recognition because of Law and Order...he is a great actor but is he president material?
I've not made up my mind about anyone yet. It's still early as far as I'm concerned.
I don't think you could actually charatierize job retaining as an "entitlement program". Obstensibly, once trained and have found employment, you're done. There would not be endless payments for the rest of your life.
David the only reason I classified it as an entitlement program is because he wanted to have a special program for these type of displaced workers not just the general benefits you get by going to Job Service.
The ONLY way to choose a candidate is not what he or she SAYS it what he or she has DONE. We have to choose our president by his or her RECORD. That is why I support RON PAUL I may not agree with everything he proposes but I do agree that we need to get back to the Constitution and we do need to repeal a lot of Bush's "exeutive orders". We need to get rid of "signing statements" that are nothing more than line item vetos. RON PAUL has stood for these things in the past and still stands consistant to his word.
I see it mentioned that RON PAUL does not have a chance. That is pure Republican and Democrat propaganda and just what they want everyone to think so they will not vote for him. I'm dumb but I'm not stupid. I will vote for RON PAUL in both the primary and general elections even if I have to write his name on the ballot. He is the ONLY candidate with the RECORD and the GUTS to stand up and be counted.
Whirlpool's global network, a work in progress, includes microwave ovens engineered in Sweden and made in China for American consumers; stoves designed in America and made in Tulsa, Okla., for American consumers; refrigerators assembled in Brazil and exported to Europe; and top-loading washers made at a sprawling factory in Clyde, Ohio, for American consumers, although some are sold in Mexico.
David K. Shall we continue to whine, then vote for them anyway? Or perhaps we should send the message that what we really want and need is someone capable of 1) listening to all, and 2) making decisions for all and not just the ones who agree.

What the Colonel says is true too. You have to take what a candidate has said and compare it with what he/she has DONE. Most voters, though, won't do that. They'll listen to what their friends and the media say and vote accordingly. We really need to be wise about how we vote, otherwise we have no one to blame but ourselves.
I'm glad the focus is on retraining workers who lose their jobs, instead of some sort of half-baked protectionist plan.
Romney, Guiliani & Hillary.
Christine, if you want to get rid of NAFTA, Ron Paul is ur guy.
On the republican side... i have narrowed down to Huckabee & Paul, they do not flip flop or lie. I don't agree with everything they say but I trust them to do what they say.
On the democratic side.... i m not sure yet, Hillary the &^%# is out for sure.
Of course, this is partly the media's fault. One false move on a major candidate's part and everyone is playing "gotcha."
I would never vote for Romney, primarily because I'm a Democrat but I'm not voting for Hillary either so I'm in on mell of a hess!
I doubt if I would ever vote GOP, I may split my vote between the Dems and Green Party.
Why would I say that Ron Paul has zero chance? Just where do you think the vote to put him in the general election will come from? It won't come from Republicans who look aghast at his idea of decriminalizing drugs and bringing American troops home! It can't be expected to come from the Democratic party. So just where?
I agree with much or Ron Paul's ideas. I do not believe, however, that Libertarianism can work for the governance of a nation of 300 million people in this day and age. That said, his election would not be that bad as he has committed to work with congress, as a president should, for anything he does. I would also like Dennis Kuchnich and he is equally unlikely to be a real contender.
This whole bootstrap philosophy is garbage. Giving a hand up when people need it keeps them productive and contributing to society. It pays off in a lot of good ways. Maybe years ago when things were easier, a person could pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, but that was in the days when a janitor could have a stay at home spouse and own his own home. Those days are long gone.
Now would that include the insurance companies who receive mandated business because people are "required" to buy insurance? Or perhaps the drug lords who have even the president trying to get Canada to not sell drugs in the US because it interferes with drug profits? Entitlements are rampant and are certainly not limited to the working class! In fact, those which benefit the average person are mostly crumbs thrown out for the consumption and appeasement of the masses!
