I was doing some research online when I discovered this information. Xylitol, which is used in a lot of sugar free candies and gums, while not harmful to humans is EXTREMELY dangerous for your pet!
I am not going to post the information I found, but will instead post links to the sites that have already put this information online (for copyright reasons, of course).
Here are some informative links:

Here is a partial list of products that contain Xylitol:
Trident Gum
Altoids
Most all sugar free chocolate candies including Wisconsin Cheeseman, Russell Stover, Hersheys,
Smint Gums and mints
Xlear Gums and Mints
Ice Breakers Gums
Check your purse, your pockets, your sugar-free mints and gums, candies, and yes, even cookies and other treats.
These products are OK and safe for you as a human to eat, but the effects of this product on your fur babies is life threatening.

True story, Darling Husband found a kitten once, when he was a bachelor. He brought the kitten in his apartment, and adopted her... he was sitting watching tv and drinking a glass of wine, and the kitten crawled over and started drinking the wine out of his glass!
He named her Bianca, because that's the name of the wine he was drinking.
