Venting ~ Ratings

I agree...However, it's personal opinion. Like some might not enjoy animal pictures. I just don't rate.

It is all about personal opinion.

It is a form of personal attack, if you dont like someone, you go rate pictures of their kids low, it has been happening here for a long time. Many people dont like my opinions, so rather than confront me, and challenge them, they hide in the shadows and rate my kids low. I have pulled many pictures, and much of my content for this reason.

I totally understand that it is a personal opinion. I personally give everyone a 10 (even if it isn't a picture that I would post). This is because it might not be my style however it means something to the person who posted it.

I admit to using my own personal scale for ratings and have noticed, been a little concerned about people who give a ten to everything. I'm saving my tens for those submissions that really knock my socks off ...

I'm not sure I necessarily agree with you as I'm not much of a child person and would much rather see dogs, cats, plants or just about anything like that. HOWEVER, I will say that I think giving people ratings is a joke. I don't bother to rate anything unless it's a 10. Is it really worth hurting someone's feelings by giving them a low rating? No, not really. If someone rates any of my articles low, I find I just ignore it.

I am not so arrogant that I think everything deserves a ten, and dont always give them, nor does it bother me when someone rates something of mine lower than 10, as long as it is justified, but to uni-bomb someone's children is dispicable.

If it is a decent photo give a 10. If you don't like the subject, don't rate it.

I agree with William. If I can't give a 10 I don't rate at all.

Personally I find the ratings system a joke. It doesn't bother me one way or another how someone rates me. If I get a DB1, I'm as happy as if I got a 10. The 1's add up, too. Some people feel obligated to rate everything they see with a ten in the hopes they will get the same in return. Some will hit every body they see with a one. It's more a personal issue than subjective. The only real solution is to either abolish the whole system or rate it: Like/Dislike.

I don't post pictures of my son. I see enough picture of children. Now, IMHO my son is just gorgeous but I don't need anyone to tell me that online. I get enough of it in real life. I also don't rate pictures of pets. I've only posted 2 pics of my birds and that will be it. I just was so excited to finally get a new pet. I haven't had one in many years. I haven't had birds since I was 9. I do find it weird how people rate things around here though. Pictures of animals and flowers get a better rating than an excellent picture of a bridge in fog, something much more photographically excellent. The subjects that get high ratings I find very strange. Also I don't know why people post pictures of photos that have been PhotoShopped. That isn't a talent, it is just clicking buttons. I want to see a photograph that was taken with a great F-stop and shutter speed, something that took some artistic work to get perfect. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Jody, it's more a "I don't like you, so I am rating you low". Or they hate recipes (for example), and give them low ratings.

I don't care, it all pays the same!

And as far as "quality" pics go, I rate the personal ones highest. People that are NOT professionals but are just out sharing their lives with us through photos. They aren't perfect, but so what? Not everyone has the money for an expensive camera to take pictures with.

I'll give a 10 no matter what it is. If the person took the time to take the photo and wanted to share it here on Gather it deserves a 10!

I feel that some people tend to rate based on the quality of the picture rather than the subject matter. I personally rate based on how the pic makes me feel, which has always been a 10 so far. I think that if someone takes the time to publish anything, it means something to them, so I feel it deserves the rating 10! I agree with your frustration, and think that people need to look more at the subject matter rather than the quality of the shot. Unless it is on a rated photography group.

and if you don't want a picture rated, posted it that way. Personally I think if you post family members or kids in general, maybe you shouldn't let it be rated.

I post pictures of animals and plants because I don't have children to take pictures of...lol. Personally I think all are beautiful and deserve a 10. The miracle of life is something that's always amazed me. I guess not being able to have kids has given me a special appreciation and a different perspective on the subject.
