CONTROLVERSIAL-DEATH PENALTY

Alex L. I support the death penalty-not because I want anyone to die, but because I want to save the lives of as many innocent victims as I can. Repeated studies have shown that the death penalty servs as a PARTIAL deterrent to would-be killers. Some of them do not carry out their plans because of the fear of retribution. Again, studies show that we save between 2.000 to 3,000 lives a year because of the death penalty.
So, while liberals continue to massage their egos (you know-"I am wonderful and civilized because I want to save the lives of these poor, misunderstood, brutal butchers"), I prefer to save my concern for my the potential victims out there. I want to save THEM. This the real world choice, not the feel-good, parallel universe, liberal choice.

I agree it is only a partial deterent, but I support it. At least, once executed, that person will not kill another innocent person.

I do not support the death penalty. We shouldn't lower ourselves to murder someone even if they murdered an innocent person. Instead the killers should be put in prison, in solitary confinement with no television, radio, books, or newspapers and let them sit there for the rest of their thinking about what they did. No chance of parole or anything. That is far worse than death.

Death penalty or not, if the criminal evolves to be a better human, its OK(at least in his next birth)

If there comes a time when we can, justly, apply the death penalty only for those handful of cases where a crime is so heinous that nothing else applies, perhaps. Until then, both just and unjust applications of the death penalty are part of a greater schema of injustice.

Morally, we agree that killing people is wrong, but we also agree that those who are a danger to our society should be killed. If we're going to say that it's okay to invade other countries in case they might kill us, we shouldn't also be saying that it's not okay to put people to death who have actually killed or destroyed the lives of others.

Financially, it costs more to keep a prisoner in jail than many of us currently make -- so those complaining about high taxes should consider whether putting them to death is more fiscally responsible than spending millions of dollars to keep them incarcerated for their natural lifespan.

Religiously, execution has been a long-standing and important tradition for maintaining religious order and authority as well. Enslavement, dismemberment, execution, torture, and slavery are all traditional, and religiously sound, methods of dealing with criminals. In most religions, human life is only particularly 'sacred' if it belongs to the same religion, if then.

Practically, dead criminals don't commit more crimes. On the other hand, discovering that the 'criminal' was innocent after you execute him doesn't sit well with people.
