| NBJC is still in talks with Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign. We hope to meet face-to-face in order to heal the wounds torn open over Sen. Obama's use of the Rev. Donnie McClurkin and other openly homophobic  gospel singers who headlined the senator's Embrace The Courage Tour. In addition, Dr. Sylvia Rhue, Director of Religious Affairs, has authored a commentary which studies gays in gospel music. Further, I am happy to announce an addition to NBJC's staff. Earl Plante has assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer primarily responsible fundraising and donor development. Finally, I invite you attend the upcoming Power of Us Events. |
As we continue to grow, we ask that you also grow with us. Your tax deductible contributions are always welcomed along with your volunteer support. Â

Black LGBT Commentaries &
 Community News
Dr. Sylvia Rhue | Thomas Dorsey invented gospel music in the 1920's. Anyone who has been moved to tears, found God, renewed their spirit, or clapped and swayed to the beauty and power of gospel (meaning "good news"), owes a debt to the musical genius of Dorsey. Gospel music emerged from a tenuous infancy (many found it to be too worldly) to a fully grown rhapsodized force through the work another genius in the 60's. That man was the Reverend James Cleveland, the King of Gospel. |

A Call to the SGL Community
to Stop the Pain
![]() | I recently read with sadness the dialogue with an alleged former lover of Rev. Donnie McClurklin who claims he and Rev. McClurkin were actively intimately involved while Donnie was very verbal regarding his negative views about homosexuality. I too remember the pangs of double church life and also thought it was necessary. I hurt so for Rev. Donnie McClurkin because I have been there. |
 Gays Around The World
Â
Talk show host, Oprah Winfrey recently dedicated an entire episode of her show speaking to issues of gays around the word. The in-depth piece shed the media spotlight on homophobia and the struggles of men, women and youth as they seek to define their identity in non-affirming cultures. |
