Holy Bible is a testimony to the fact that God in His infinite wisdom knew, at the very dawn of creation, that Satan would strive tirelessly to drag man into sin. However, God’s mysterious act of redemption was only waiting to happen to give man his lost share in the heavenly kingdom. God thus foretold the birth of Mary through whom Jesus Christ was to be born in to this world.
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed and her seed. She shall crush your head”.
Surely, women have a very special role in the world. The divine mission ordained by God Himself when He said “Increase and multiply”. Let us take a look at these God’s own special beings.
The world is revolving on an axis of genders - the male and the female, the former being physically stronger of the two sexes while the latter embodies a source of attraction and a companion for the former but above all a God- ordained specie to carry on with the creative process set into motion by the Almighty Himself when He said “Increase and multiply”.
The ratio of male and female has not made much of a difference in the society, but in essence the male tend to dominate the female in every sphere, though contribution made by both would measure up to a fifty-fifty ratio. It would not, therefore, be in the fitness of things to comb the corridors of gender bastion to identify contributions made by each towards the society. Doing this would be like pressing the trigger on an unarmed individual since both were created by God with some definite purpose and the world survives within the periphery of this divine architecture. No one makes a gold-plated weighing machine to weigh iron – do we?
In order to study the merits of gender-related contribution, there is need to place them on the respective track at appropriate distance, one away from the other. The male is by right the bread earner while the female looks after the home. The male, by physique as well as by way of will power, is hardier of the two sexes whereas females have a weak and tolerant nature. Women, in essence is the architecture of God’s own wisdom that lives up to the need for the upbringing of children. However, with the passage of time, the trends have changed and as of today, the females, while maintaining the equilibrium of the male-female ratio, have aspired to contribute equally at par with the males.
There is every reason to laud the contributions made to the society, on the scale of ascend by females within such a short span of time. Women, we should remember were, till recently, confined to the four walls of a kitchen, fanning the fire and burning their fingers. They have hardly seen a century outside these four walls. They are, by nature a shy bit and to shake off that shyness, you would have to give them at least a span to celebrate a golden jubilee of their discarding the gates of their kitchen home. Women have come a long way within the shortest period. Today, these shy girls of yesteryears are facing the world of males, single handedly, competing in every sphere with the males begging their way into their hearts. Women have all sorts of frailties – physical, psychological, mental and above all their dependency on males. Once the girls came out in to the open, their first task was to churn out a status quo that the society would accepted on the face value. To achieve such an identity they had to ward off the male domination and then aspire for higher levels. Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher and Sirimao Bandarnaik, were exceptions that made history, while some females got catapulted into positions through mere fate like the case of Khaleda Zia, Benazir Bhutto etc after the death of their dear ones. Sonia Gandhi, the present UPA Chairperson in India is a class apart from any of the above personalities. A charismatic figure whose desire to serve people even after being pushed to the wall in the political wilderness, after having been victimized by the very people whose country she had adopted as her own, through grievously pointed antagonism and criticism of her dedication to serve people. Like her, there are many more females who have scaled dizzy heights through sheer hard-work and dedication. Well, the succeeding paragraphs will have a blend of what diverse problems these God-send species have had to encounter in order to achieve what would have been termed as near impossible by our forefathers a couple of centuries ago.
Women occupy a centre position in the society. They, by virtue of their beauty and soft spoken attitude, have become an envied lot among the society and much sought after species by especially male generation. Women are endowed with the prime responsibility of bearing children and rearing them up with the assistance of her male companion. The Holy Bible narrates how Eve, the first woman was tempted by the devil that came in the form of a serpent that convinced her to eat the forbidden fruit of the tree located in the middle of the garden of Eden, which she did and later even offered to Adam, the first man created by God who also partook of the fruit. That is to say man, no matter whatever his determination may be, on most occasions succumbs to the wishes of a female.
Every human being whether male or female, is created to live with the opposite sex, as a companion, very much as the Holy Bible narrates that God first made man in his own image and likeness. Thereafter, out of a bone removed from Adam’s side, God made Eve and gave to him for a companion. Thus came to exist the First Woman.
Women, thus came to exist for the sake of men and as a result of a union of both, the child is conceived and given birth to from the womb of the woman. From time immemorial, women have stayed at home tending to children and preparing the food for their husbands. However, times have changed and gradually they have started coming outdoors to earn like their husbands or the males do. Today, the women all over the world have come out of the four walls and accepted responsibilities just as men do. As a result, today we have women contributing their might in every field, donning uniforms as men do, accepting responsibilities, traveling far and wide, alone or with others and independently meeting deadlines in fulfillment of their duties and responsibilities, but to cap it all, women have ascended to be astronauts managing space flights even as this piece is put up for the readers. They have excelled in every aspect, earned awards and contributed immensely to the growth of the society. They have earned accolades for their meritorious contribution in the society. There are no words to pay tributes for the incessant work and meritorious service put in by them for the growth of the society.
ABUSE OF WOMEN, INDIGNITIES HEAPED ON THEM
But alas, when all is said and done, there are certain areas where they have silently suffered ignominy, indignity, torture and even death at the hands of reckless people. As we said above, both the man and woman come together in a bond of love and a marriage occurs, as a result of which a child is conceived out of their union. The marriage, at times falls apart and, more often than not, the women have had to suffer the consequences of such a break. Most religions are lenient as to the breaking up of marriage through a formal divorce, which is normally legalized through Courts. In certain cases, the couple themselves decides to live separately. In such cases, the custody of children, if any, becomes an issue, which are often times resolved through the court. However, the fate of women, even after a formal divorce, becomes a dejected one, since in most cases they are required to live a life of their own, tending to children or maintaining a low profile, having to take on the world all alone. The males on their part opt for another partner to spend the rest of their lives. The fate of women is even different under Islamic laws, where the system of divorce is even more agonizing viz. by a mere utterance of the word ‘Talaq’ (divorce) thrice by the male. Here the women suffer the most indignity heaped on their integrity and self-esteem, where the male dominates to the extent of deciding to leave his wife at his sweet will. These are only some of the conditions through which a human being born as a female has to endure. But the females suffer such irregularities of life, calmly and with dignity and the world goes on –as willed by God.
Whatever their fate is, the women are a determined lot. They have the grit and determination to accept life in whatever form it may come to them. They suffer in silence and bear the indignities heaped on them by unscrupulous elements in the society. Indeed these are the hands that rock the cradle and rear up the next generation. And the fate of each child will again fall back to the respective genders. And the world will move on and Women with it. How sublime is the world with these angelic humans - the women!
