The book This Is Our War: A Soldiers' Portfolio: Servicemen's Photographs of Life in Iraq presents 256 photos that GQ collected from American servicemen and women, in order to tell the story of America's Iraq experience with their pictures in their own voices. This is a candid soldier's-eye view of war. It's the conflict the way they see it: apolitically, intimately, with honesty and humor and courage. This is a snapshot of history in the making.

Through Veterans Day, ten articles will be posted to veterans.gather.com, each with a picture from the book included. Gather will randomly select one member from each of these articles to receive a copy of This Is Our War. All you have to do is show your support for our soldiers by leaving a comment for the picture posted.

Between An Najaf and Basra, southern Iraq

En route to Kuwait at the end of his deployment, the photographer captured this image of a young Marsh Arab who had just made a sale of handmade trinkets to U.S. troops; she carries American bills in her hand. "The Marsh Arabs" are Shia," says the photographer, "and they have been persecuted to no end. Saddam drained all of their farmland. This is one of my favorite pictures of the whole war, because here, on my way home, I got to see the empowerment of the people who we were supposed to be helping all along. This girl is selling her products in a free market here."

Speedy ~ You offer such positive re-enforcements to the American people and I appreciate them all. This photo and it's explanation gave me goosebumps. How endearing! Makes you want to come back and see her as a woman. I am sure this is a memory that will long run in her mind, too. Thanks for being so supportive of our troops. We hear far too much negative. It is refreshing to see articles such as these. Thank you so very much.

Great contest- looking forward to seeing more of the photos, it's sad that war impacts children the most and they have no say in the decisions leading to the war

What a moving photograph! You can see the emotion (elation) in her face at having made money this way. There is no way to understand the demeaning treatment these people have received at the hands of their enemies. Sadam is one of many they have had to endure. I feel proud that our soldiers have made this kind of difference in her life, and I know she must be grateful as well.

God bless our soldiers and the Iraqi people.

It's photographs and stories like this one that really "bring home" the war to those of us who did not serve during this conflict. It's good to see some of the positive work our service men and women have performed, especially with respect to the younger Iraqi's who's lives are forever marred by the scars of this "not a war" war.

My boyfriend's son is on his 3rd tour in Iraq - he tells some amazing stories of the courage and ingenuity of these peoples.
This picture is so moving... and means so much more by knowing of all the heartbreak and sadness that is over there.

This is a great photo, the girl looks so happy. But I believe it is time to bring our troops home! My brother-in-law, is actively serving right now, but it has caused him so much mental distress, that he is currently in a military hospital, getting help. He has literally gone crazy, from the things he has seen, been involved in and done, while serving for our country. It is tearing our family up. He is not the same Lance that we cried over and sent on the plane to Iraq.

I wonder if we will ever know of all the inocent people who were hurt in this war. It seems to me that the government isn't telling us everything.

My son saw combat in both Iraq and Afghanistan. It's wonderful to know that some good has come from it. This young lady in red is a visual that may help them when they return . . . something we all hope can be done sooner than later!

Like the photographer, I like this photo too. It is a great example of one of the reasons we are there. How wonderful! This is a great side of the war to see.
