I've noticed we tend to be a passionate lot. There seems to be no half measures; whether it's Pat's shiny things, Steve's baseball or golf for Ken and Dave. We must not forget John's passion for digging holes.
I'd like to share my other passion and invite you to share yours. Inspiration is every where when you are talking/writing about your passions.
I love, love roses. I say they are a passion. If I'm to be honest they've been something of an obsession.
There are literally hundreds of classifications for roses, with subclasses, which I'm not going to bore you with. We're just going to look at the Modern classes today. A modern rose is one which was bred after the Great Depression.
The most common are:
The hybrid tea. A hybrid tea should have an upright growth habit with blooms borne mostly single. These are what you find in the flower shops. Classification is decided by the breeder, and some are debated like Heirloom; the mauve in the grouping below.
Floribunda; as the name suggests they are abundant bloomers. Floribundas bloom in sprays (multiple blooms on a single stem) They tend to be easier to grow than hybrid teas and most of them are prolific bloomers. If you want vase roses, floribundas aren't what you want.
Grandiflora- I don't have many of this class in my garden. A grandiflora is supposed to bloom in sprays and ideally show a bloom at each stage on one stem.
I have about 200 roses of 135 varieties growing in my yard. I have antique roses, Hybrid Bourbons and Perpetuals.. If you like the really fragrant, full blooms on an independent bush which would rather you not fuss over it, I'd recommend these two classes. Sorry I'm at image limit. You can look at the classes and research roses at helpmefind.com/rose
I also have shrub, mini and mini-flora rose bushes. While I like to look at miniature roses, I really don't like to take care of them. They are a pain to dead head, but I will admit they are far sturdier than you would think. Tough as nails, that's most minis.
Hybrid Teas are my favorite class. Unfortunately my winter losses have brought me around to the fact that it is best for me to grow shrub roses and floribundas. Sniff, I miss them. When faced with losing 71 roses in two seasons, denial is no longer an indulgence I can afford.
David Austin has managed to combine cabbage rose blooms with consistent re-blooming. His roses are fragrant, sturdy, lovely and winter hardy... so don't feel too sorry for me.
; 0 )
I'm moving toward a no spray garden. I've decreased my spraying to once in the spring and only if disease shows up during the growing season. If you don't like insects, don't look too closely in my garden. My husband proclaimed the beds were infested with spiders. ROFL If any of you are wondering that's why J.K.'s horror entry tickled me so. I like seeing assassin bugs in my garden.
What is your OTHER passion? and how does it tie into your writing?

My floral passion are lilies. I LOVE lilies. I'm working on rebuilding my collection since I moved. I left my lilies (and bearded irises) in the garden of the house I sold. The F*(##*ing jerks dug them all up and discarded them. Apparently $500 worth of flower bulbs had no worth to them. They could have told me they didn't want them and I would have gladly removed them from the premises. I assumed they bought the house and wanted the gorgeous land scaping in tact. NO. They cut down most of the trees and uprooted the bushes too. You should have seen the wedding lace bush they ripped up. I almost cried. Okay, their house, bought and paid for. I need to get over it.
I have a lily group here on gather. justlilies.gather.com The pictures posted there are phenomenal! Daylilies, asiatics, and my favorites, the oriental lilies.
Okay, the miracle shower has me feeling a bit more lively. Now I feel like more awake crap. I'm hoping a cup of miracle tea does the trick. If it was Thursday, I'd not feel so guilty for calling in sick, but it's Wednesday and I'd be letting a LOT of students down (suuuure, they say). But truly, I have students that forbid me to get sick. (not many, mind you)
My passion? Easy. Writing.
My passion other than writing - I have a few, and they've changed over the years. It used to be cooking, then gardening, now it's running. And those are all aside from family, of course.
My kids have passed the "I'm full of kisses for the mommy I haven't seen in 5 days" and are now full into the "I'm being a monster to pay you back for leaving me" phase. Just in time for Halloween.
My passions other than writing? Hmmm...not sure some are ready for public attention. I do love to read and spend more time on that than many other pursuits. Used to dance and teach dance, but don't do either currently. Love live theatre and movies, but the entertainment budget is currently very tight. I'm passionate about God, about the Braves, and about my nieces and nephews. Oh, yeah--I'm definitely passionate about learning. I could go to school for the rest of my life and be happy, happy, happy. A PhD? Would love to pursue one.
I'd like to be passionate about a husband, but haven't met the man yet.
Terrifying Tales Results!
Glad to be done with that voting. So, so hard to give out only one 10.
this Halloween.
Lisa, purple, lilac..etc.. are classified as Mauve. My best guess would be he got you Blue Nile or Blue Ribbon. Renewal of vows.. how romantic. Could the Magic Kingdom be a passion for you?
J.K. is your yellow monster really thorny? I'm willing to bet it's Mermaid. Should be called Mer-monster.
WOOT! Thanks Beth for letting me know. Vivain I bow to you.. thank you for taking this challenge on for us.
IAN!! How could I forget Buffy and Angel.. thank you.
Wendy: Since Viv rejected me, I was then going to give you a 10 for hosting this thread, but you also have ratings turned off.
What gives? Did Patrick insinuate his theory of the inherent nefariousness (nefariosity? nefaricity?) of ratings into your gullible minds? :>) Just kidding, of course.
At any rate, congrats to the top three. I won't spill names here. Wombats: check out the link above.
I too love gardening when I have the time. Mine is a bit weedy right now and I feel ashamed, it just looks at me like a neglected child. Writing, of course, when I'm not running to finish papers for school! What I love most, is when I have stopped running and can stand in the moment and appreciate it. Time is fleeting, carpe diem, all that.
Everyone- I loved all the stories, I really enjoyed seeing how each person approached the task. Truly an exercise in psychology! Glad I couldn't submit or vote, congratulations all.
Can we have a show of hands, or a head count (dangerous on hallowe'en) of those participating in the nanowrimo? I'd like to add you all to my buddy list. (That doesn't mean I'll pester you, but then I can see how you're doing on your word count.) I think if you mention wombats in your interests, I'll be able to search for you. The trick, Pat, is to not reveal your exact location. You can always opt out of receiving notices from your local group, too. Last year I attended zero meetings, write-ins, parties. Other years I've gone to 3 or 4.
And Wendy, thank you for hosting such a lovely thread. Your pictures are beautiful. I must admit, that my expulsion from the girl club continues, however. I don't much like ice cram, I'm not a fan of chocolate, and I can't abide the smell of roses. Lovely to look at, but can't handle the smell. My mother's name is Rose, and she had a backyard full of roses, mostly old Chryler Imperial roses, and of course, everyone gave her rose scented gifts. On hot summer afternoons, as a child playing the yard, I was completely surrounded by the scent of roses, to the point of being cloying. But they are beautiful to see.
I'l have to think about my passions. As for flowers, give me a nice unscented tulip. Bunches of them. For scented flowers, I'll take lilacs or gardenias.
JK, thank you for the tips. I'll take off my location, and put wombats in my interests. I'm not writing, but want to be able to cheer for you.
Vivian my garden looks bad too. The grandbaby has kept me so busy..it got neglected this year. Good thing roses and flowers in general are sturdy.
And if you have a moment, you must, must go see Jamie's lily group. SWOON!
I put up the picture of the yellow rose on my page, so you can look at it and tell me what kind it is. Now that I look at it again, I'm not sure if that's a jet or just a plane. I'm sure it's not superman...or underdog.
Off to dissect the joints of pigs in lab. I don't think I've ever had so much fun! NOT! I'm SOOOO in a cranky mood. Beware of evil teacher students. Beware!
Is that NaNoWriMo website slower than a dead turnip rolling up a hill, or is it just me?
AND Happy Halloween all! I'm celebrating by teaching a night class. Oh what a joy. (yes, feeling sarcastic at the moment - I'm no fun when I don't feel well, but who is, really?)
J.K. J.K. I'm in Nano as Johnphilipp but I can't figure out how to create a buddy list. Hell, I can hardly get on the site -Sloooow.
Guess they have almost a hundred thousand people this year.
Happy Halloween ..
Wow.. Wendy. you've got wonderful roses to share..I can even smell them....
And you absolutely right..passion leads our ways..and you found it in roses..well I found it in writing poetry and dealing with my students daily...
Wendy beautiful Roses. I like Iris's. Also great links for Halloween.
Pat. Too much of a good this is really bad. There are scents/foods that I'm sure almost everyone feels that way. On the girl front...I don't like shoes :)
Passion: Cars, driving, traveling. Though I don't get enough of any of them.
Obsessions: Cleaning, organizing. And things that smell good, candles, just any kind of little scented thing.
So, what's with the turnips today?
So it isn't just me who thinks the NaNoWriMo site is slooooow. That's good. I thought maybe the administrators had a personal vendetta against me. Always good to know when one is being overly paranoid.
Well, I've made it through the bulk of the day. We'll see how the night class goes later. I'm thinking of cuting it short. I'm starting to feel really icky now. Maybe I just need some more miracle tea.
Missed the place where you could list interests. Guess I'll have to check back in later. Austin Cushing started a Gather group called gatherwrimo. And Jennifer (?) has some cool stuff going on. John, do you know how to find her quickly? JK, you gonna set up something for just Wombats and wrimo?
I don't like turnips. Can I still be a Wombat? And I don't have a closet full of shoes (and hate clothes shopping), so can I still be a girl?
I need to get out the toolbox and bang together some sort of plot. Something with turnips.
So go for it, JK. Start a Wombat Wrimo article. I'll spaz out there with you, if no one else wants to. We can record our word count each day. It might encourage us to keep writing. Kind of a competition.
I'm so glad you signed up, Beth! I think it will be fun. Just get that inner editor under control!
I don't like shoes either.. or clothes shopping, perfume nor am I much on jewerly.. perhaps I'm not girly either.. smile
Fingers in my ears..lalalalalalala..I will not sign up for wrimo.. won't, won't..lalalalala..
I've got all of my little things done which have been neglected, and now I'm off to work on my wip.
See...This is why I write; everything else confuses me. HA.
I knew we'd lure you in, Beth :-)
Wendy, the roses are lovely. Thank you.
I have no love for shoes. I go for comfort over style every time. And I never wear jewelry. NEVER. I know that makes me an outcast in Pat's eyes. No shiny things for me.
Jennifer's stuff is at:
NaNoWriMo Support Group
J.K. Definitely have our group somehwere on Gather. Today's pep memo from NaNo indicated they know they have a computer problem and will have it fixed by next year. Right now it sounds like they got so many people they're just trying to hang on.
Duct tape, guys. DUCT TAPE!
"Cool, ten dollars. I just want one ear pierced, so that will be five dollars, right?"
After much conference.
"No, it's a package deal, $10 if you get one ear pierced or two."
So, a conundrum until a flash of inspiration hits.
"Fine, but it won't matter if the ears are on separate heads, right?"
More conference.
"Um, I guess not."
So, that's the story of how I got my ear pierced. The funny thing is, we didn't know what we were doing. For no particular reason, he got his right ear pierced and I did the left one. We didn't know there is a signal, right ear means you're gay (or it did back then). My friend was a huge homophobe. Needless to say, his earring didn't last long.
Ken, great story! :-)
Aren't there 10 or 12 of us? Wombats Do Wrimo or something could be the group name.
Though they all had Italian names, most researchers believe they were Sephardic Jews who came from Spain or Portugal in the fifteenth century. In the reply above, I meant to say the sixteenth century, not the fifteenth. They were there in the 1500s.
You can learn more at my genealogy site for the Lupos.
J.K. when you're done with those turnips, I need them for the hicken soup. I prefer, fresh, uncooked turnips m'self.. used to eat them like carrots out of the garden.
JP beetles.. I do a happy dance every June when they don't show up in my garden. I think it's too cold here for them.. oh darn! I've heard rumor that if one plants lavender in the rose beds the JP's stay away.. apparently they don't like lavender.
This imported pest does major damage to roses along the eastern seaboard and have reached into the midwest. Perhaps if we plant lavender along the entire border of WA state they'll stay out. hmm
Matt, my auntie traced our family back to about the fifteenth century too. It would seem there were three rouge brothers who were offered to hang or go to the new world. So that's how my dad's family got to America.. proud stuff. LOL
I am shameless, anytime I can share my roses it's a good day.. you are all most certainly welcome.
Wombats do wrimo
We'll be in touch. (Famous last words.)
According to USA today, one of the top ten places in the world to admire roses is right here in my hometown. This park butts up against my high school, and was one of favorite places to study or just cut classes.
Park of Roses. Click on the link for the rose festival for some lovely photos.
My passion for shiny things is not necessarily about jewelry (although that is quite nice). It's actually a reference to my collection of glass objects d'art. I prefer signed originals, rather than mass-produced, but will buy anything if it catches my fancy or amuses me. As easily distracted as I am, however, my passions ebb and flow and switch direction without warning. One week it's Hawaiian tribal art, the next it might be charming little Halycon trinket boxes. I have entirely too much stuff.
Wendy, good article. My other passion is music, though reading, golf, hiking and cross-country skiing are also up there.
Oct 31 Happy Halloween everybody
OK Jill, dad also once worked on a Rose Parade float for the city of West Covina, where sis was living at the time. Had a blast, although, fussy artist that he is, he kept wanting to redesign things. The artistry in those things is astonishing. I'm always amazed by the tiny black seeds they use to achieve outlines and eyes and such. Of course, our engineering friends here are probably more awestruck by the moving parts and such.
The doorbell has finally stopped ringing, the tricksters have subsided for the night, and hubs is thrilled to his toes with all the leftover Milky Ways and Snickers bars. He'll be on a chocolate high for a week. Sigh....
Contest news: I see that the Amazon contest is full and has a waiting list. Filled up October 22nd. Weren't a couple of Wombats in it? I would be interested in seeing how that all works out for people. Anybody keeping tabs on the Crime/Horror contest? Are they getting good entries? Are they getting a lot of them?
Ken's ear ring story: One time I fell asleep on the couch and my stepdaughter painted my toenails. I woke up and figured, "Oh well, no big deal. I wear socks and shoes anytime I'm in public anyway." Forgot all about it until I went over to the Y, played basketball, then took a shower. I don't know if anybody noticed, but I was just a tad quicker than normal getting socks and shoes on.
Via email, I'm arguing with my son about gravity. Here's a sample:
DBC: Out of curiosity, what is the basis for the reasoning that Gravity could possibly be a function of volume? Black Holes sort of destroy the whole idea, though, but I'm curious how anyone could come to that conclusion.
KLC: Gravity is still a mystery. Newton says it is the result of attraction between the masses of two bodies. Einstein says gravity and acceleration are the same thing, so gravity must be an acceleration through curved time/space. Gravity, supposedly, operates instantneously without any medium. I don't buy this. The volume idea (which I find interesting but not persuasive) imagines that gravity operates via a force, like a wind, that can be blocked. How much gets blocked? Well, that would depend on the size of the shield (i.e. volume). I'm more interested in the idea that gravity has several components, one of which is a sort of surface tension, which would correlate to the diameter or surface area of the thing you're standing on. As far as I know, we don't have data about the density of other planets and what the gravitational force is. It would be interesting to measure the gravity on two planets with similar diameter and different mass (density). Maybe the intuitive thought that gravity would be greater on a denser planet is correct. But, we don't know. My sense is that gravity is not just one thing, it's a mix of forces that we have not decyphered yet. It propagates through space at some finite (but fast) rate. It acts via waves which are too small for our instruments to measure.
I guess Steve is gearing up for his big writer's conference.
Gravity is due to mass. Black hole is close to an infinite mass that keeps enlarging, so wouldn't the gravity of a black hole increase with time. Why yes I think it would.
Hey, I might be wrong. Like I said, physics is not my thing. Give me some biology any ole day.
Thanks James.. nice to see you back.
Pat, we don't get trick or treaters and my DH was trying to convince me I needed to by candy on the off chance.. um, yeah.. no. We've grown enough.
Dale! Nice to have you back. There are three of us in the Amazon thing. It starts Nov 12th. I'm still recooping from FCR, I'll wait until the starting gun reports before diving into that.
And I can bet you were never more aware of your toes, than that day at the Y. Aren't girls fun?
In the cauldren (don't worry all the haze is from dry ice) you'll find a hard punch, fruity I believe. There are a collection of cut crystal bowls (to make Pat's eyes shine) with an assortment of Halloween goodies.
My son has stealthfully hidden rubber vermin in the bowls, so don't freak if you hit a spider or bat.. IT ISN'T REAL.. honest. The dogs are, and they don't get candy; no matter how pathetic they appear.
Albert Einstein Dreams
Crystal bowls? I'm likely to dump the candy and take the bowls. Crystal is a lovely form of glass. I love to wash my crystal, just to make all the glasses and bowls sing. Yes, the sound drives the dog nuts, but it makes a lovely sound!
Ken, my kid and I argue via email over whether or not I should read the book "Perfume". He's in favor, I'm opposed. His girlfriend emails me to lament his lack of ambition. Hey honey, sorry, he takes after his dad. I tried to warn you. But gravity and black holes? Um, no. Hubs tries to engage me in that kind of stuff, but I'd rather go see if I can play "Mary had a little lamb" on my crystal glasses.
Oh dear, I'm talking to myself again. Better lay off the fermented turnips.
Just caught up on the last thread. Starr, congrats on a great first two chapters ---- from what I saw, you deserved to be published and you earned it!
I'd agree with Judi that the Pocket must have been looking for particular types of stories. I'll confess that I thought Meredith's entry needed more work (and said so in my FCR2 comment). I also think our three wombat paranormal entries were excellent (Judi, Jamie, Dale), but they obviously weren't looking for this type of story.
It is ironic that Pocket basically ignored the popular vote in their selections, but they need to make the call based on their editorial needs I guess.
Happy Halloween to all.
Speaking of shiny things - my glass slipper hasn't arrived yet. I'll have to call the glassblower - maybe he can arrange for Prince Charming to bring it - oh, that's right. I already have a Prince Charming - he of the breakfast in bed and Renewal of Vows ceremony.
I did my own trick-or-treating with my neighbor. I get very few at my house on the out-of-the-way cul-de-sac ( I hate hyphens!!!!!!!!!!!) so she invited me to her house where the open wine bottles made up for ringing door bells. Fun for a few hours - especially since we convinced the Survivor girl across the street to come join us. Good times had by all.
Thinking of all our Nanu-nanu writers tomorrow - or in 77 minutes, should you decide to start at the official start time. I'll be a Lady of Leisure tomorrow - lounging around reading. Something I haven't done since over 100 Gather-ers emailed me to make sure I was going to do a little thing called FCR. (Along with the agent - the readers asking me to do it were the best thing to come out of that contest. ) Now I need to get back to Judi - so allow me to cheer all the "Morks" on (Nanu-nanu? Come on, it's late here on the east!) - please feel free to share the WIPs. We'd all love to see them! And to thwart the DB1ers (who are bound to come out, as it's, you know, another contest and they can't seem to help themselves) don't allow ratings. Honest comments or nothing!
Have at it, everyone!
Woot finally something we differ on Jamie...also did you know it's illegal to block a personal drive way. :)
Oh forget eggs at a point like that. Shaving cream removes paint, as does 409. Bleach on convertiables is nice too. People do sleep at some point. :)
K that enough evil thoughts even for Halloween
I'm on the opposite coast, however. By the time I start, Jamie will just be finished pranking her neighbors.
