As the holiday season draws near, there's a good chance some of us may be spending time with relatives. Hopefully this is a good thing. Is all well between you and your relatives? Do any of these quotes resound with you?Can you think of any more quotes related to getting along with, or not getting along with, family or relatives? What do you wish would happen at your get-togethers?

 

No matter what happens, you'll always have your family.

 

You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family.

 

I don't care whether you like them or not--you're related.

In my clan, it's more like "You can pick you nose and you can pick your seat, but who picked these clowns to be my family?" I don't get along with my family...and never have. As far as I'm concerned; I have no family. My best friend is all the family I need. (Saves on having to buy birthday and holiday presents and cards!)

We're here in Washington.....they're there, in Michigan, Ohio, New Jersey, Missouri, and Arizona. It's too far and too stressful to travel at holiday times. When we were young, my husband and I were quite blithe about living so far from our extended family. We usually do see some family at least once a year. And we love Washington. But I miss family!!

We've lived out of the country for a couple of years but we still come home to visit family once or twice a year. I email them regularly, send gifts to the neices and nephews and write occasionally. I want my kids to have a sense of larger family.

Well, my mom owns a bar and thinks it is perfectly acceptable to invite us to have Thanksgiving with her-in the bar-with our families and any other drunk who has nothing better to do on Thanksgiving. Needless to say, we are not going. I have my family whom I love but can't be around for more than, oh, ten minutes (I am a recovering alkie, so it is neither fun nor healthy for me to hang out with mom regularly), but I also have my CHOSEN family, and that is where we will go for both Thanksgiving AND Christmas. Also, we will spend part of both days at my boyfriend's family gatherings. My sisters and I get together a lot outside of the holidays, so I don't ever have the chance to miss them, LOL!

My mom had two standards: "This is the best Christmas I ever ha-ad!" (2 syllables--she was from Mississippi)

and:

"Oh, we forgot to take a picture of the table before we ate!"--so we have a series of photos of a dining table that had been beautifully set with dirty dishes all over it and chairs askew.

With my varying ages, I think I can safely say I am looking at approximately 10 more years of ot. At that point, as long sa I have NO MORE SURPRISES, I should only have one left at home! :)
