RACE--is a made up idea that does not exist genetically. Skin pigmentation arose depending on the UV radiation received in human populations depending on latitude so as to preserve folic acid levels in the blood and to maintain high enough levels of vitamin D production. Humans could not settle in areas north of 45 degrees north (or south of 45 degrees south) until the advent of fishing (to provide a source of Vitamin D). There are greater genetic differences between different populations of people than there are between people of different skin colors in a population.

I have a very colorful family and its wonderful
Depending on where you are there are those that think nationality and race are one in the same. For example there are those that are surpised and say that I can't be Cuban because all Cubans are black. Cubans come in all shades and tones...it is a nationality not a race as defined by society. And why is it on all forms italians/ french/ irish etc are all white? and everyone from a spanish country is bunched in as "hispanic"? Where did that come from? Hispanol? I guess it is better than in the old days when it was just listed as other.
My question is why ask at all? At least now a day you can decline to fill out that section of applications etc.
There is only one race..THE HUMAN RACE!! :)

"The Journal of Human Evolution." Who knew (that there was such a journal)?
Thanks, Dan - I'm going to reference this article in "GATHER Discusses Tolerance," a new group at nohate.gather.com.
Are there many ideas that are not "made up"?
I have friends across many countries and skin colours.
I do believe over time we will not have racism as an issue. However, I'm sure somebody will come up with something else to argue over, or maybe they already have.
Dan, well done. You sparked a very interesting debate. Much like the death of the Nobel Prize DNA scientist last week.
By the way, I'm part Jewish. We're an ethnic group that includes people of different "races." Some African Jews are black, while Eastern European Jews are white. I just think it's interesting because race and ethnicity don't always intersect as neatly as you might assume they would.
One book that I found extremely interesting regarding the argument some make about the "superiority" of one group over another is "Guns, Germs and Steel". Here's the link to the Wikopedia entry about the Pulitzer Prize winning book:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guns,_Germs,_and_Steel
After reading this, you will never view the concept of "race" the same again.
Take care! more
