15 Ways to Get Exercise Into Your Work Day:
Do you work in an office? Do you sit at a desk all day? Here are some great, easy ways to get a little more movement into your day.
- Get up 10 or 15 minutes early and walk the dog or do some stretching or light calisthenics before or after your morning shower.
- If you go to a fast-food restaurant for breakfast on your way to work don’t use the drive-thru. Instead, park and walk into the restaurant. And make a healthy choice!
- Or, use that extra 10 or 15 minutes you got up early to make your own healthy breakfast and lunch, and spend the time walking around your kitchen as you prepare your meals.
- Park your car the farthest away from the office door as safely possible and increase the steps you take today.
- If you ride a bus, train, subway, etc., and it is safe to do so, get off a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way.
- Don’t take the elevator. Use the stairs instead. If you’re on the 30th floor, ride to the 25th floor and take the steps the rest of the way. Improvise to what fits your situation. Gradually increase the number of floors you climb as you get used to the stairs.
- Walk to lunch instead of driving.
- Better yet, take a healthy lunch, spend the first quarter of your lunch time eating at your desk or in the break room, then take a short walk.
- If you work at a desk all day, take short breaks and do some seated stretches such as neck and shoulder rolls, shoulder shrugs, side stretches, knee extensions, or foot and toe stretches.
- Get up and take a quick walk around your office or go to the copy machine, mail station, fax, or water fountain.
- Instead of emailing or calling the person at the other end of the hall, walk to their office and deliver your message in person. Just be mindful of getting caught up in a lengthy conversation.
- Use a speakerphone or mobile phone and pace your office space as you talk.
- Stand up during phone conversations.
- Keep a small pair of hand weights at your desk. Do arm curls while you’re on the phone.
- Once every hour get up and take a quick walk to the water fountain. Drink a small cup of water while you’re there to help hydrate yourself.
